Fire deaths trial 1350:

BREAKING: Sentencing of Mick and Mairead Philpott has been adjourned until 10:30 tomorrow, Mrs Justice Thirlwall tells Nottingham Crown Court.

I hope the judge doesn't go soft on the comments of them being good parents.

Judge should realise the amount of public interest there is in this case and surely will not dare give a too lenient sentence as it will cause a public outcry.

I would be gobsmacked if they did em bearing in mind their long term attempts to mislead the investigation

at least one of them might get a reduced sentence on the basis they are low IQ and easily dominated

furry, the public can have no sway over any judiciary, otherwise you would likely see most politicians swinging from lampposts.

have you read his record sheet, it's like a who's who of thuggery.
They said none of his previous could be relayed to the jury, it would be prejudicial to the case, totally understand that, but he was on bail for a road rage incident before the fire. One long line of violent behaviour, or that is how it reads, right from early on in his life.

I think the problem will be that Mairead Philpott will have a lot of mitigation and therefore should be sentenced more leniently according to sentencing guidelines. The Judge will have to balance that with weight of public opinion, whilst maintaining the impartiality of law, which I don't think will be easy.

The more I read about him and the things he has done and his lifestyle its truly despicable behaviour, the man is scum and I hope he gets a lengthy sentence. There will be a public outcry if he doesn't.

Bear in mind that the judge is sentencing three defendants here. My guess is that she has made her mind up about Philpott male, but is trying to assess in her own mind the culpability of Philpott female, e.g. to what extent was she coerced into going along with the plan, out of fear. On last night's documentary she seemed to be of low intelligence and malleable, something of a pawn.

I can't believe how much Paul Mosely (his evil partner in crime) looks just like him (Mick Philpott) it's a bit strange because there haven't been many pictures in the paper of this man - wonder why?

going on his track record that may be the case, however even people of low intelligence know the difference between right and wrong, they may not act accordingly, but they do know. She didn't have to follow him, nor indeed be complicit in this truly awful case, she could have had the guts to not do it, and turned him in to the police. But she didn't and was as guilty in the crime, that may of course be what they are weighing up, but she should go to prison, and he should go to prison for life.

The Derbyshire social workers will have much to answer for in this case - never went near them, despite all the previous bad publicity of this family. Probably too busy going after soft targets instead?

I think the Judge is having a good long hard think about this one in order to avoid the possibility of any appeal. Good on her to say "I want to think about this". She's obviously not Philpott's No 1 fan after her comments yesterday.

I think Sharingan is right with regards to the wife. I really really do not understand a woman who is so under a man's spell she would go along with such a crack pot scheme, but she was undoubtedly under his spell. However between the three, the Judge will need to consider the parity of sentencing.
