Got to agree with jackthehat on this one, if those responsible for the regular reviews had carried them out this would never had happened, and instead of blaming Europe this time those responsible in this country should be held responsible.

Seems to me if anyone here had been unlawfully detained for 2½ years they'd expect to be compensated too. It's not as if he's being rewarded for raping someone. The government wants to sort our system out so there is no staling of justice.

To get the matter exactly right, the European Convention on Human Rights and the court which ensures its rules are obeyed is nothing to do with the Common Market. That has 27 members currently. The ECHR was instituted by the Council of Europe, this has 47 members, including Switzerland, Russia and most of the old Warsaw Pact countries. It's been in existence since 1953 and we signed up to it in 1998.
