Hollande was given the camel in thanks for helping out in Mali. He considered taking it back to a zoo but instead left it with a local family.

Who promptly ate it!

Another thought did cross my mind that I wold like to ask fellow AB'ers who despise zoo's. Is the camel better off eaten rather than being in a zoo?

NB, I have mixed feelings on zoo's.

Looks like a good decision from the families POV, as they had a festival coming up, and the didn't want to sacrifice one of their own animals, i.e lessening your percieved wealth. From the camels POV, it's a really bad outcome, but we couldn't blame M Hollandefor this outcome, even though the French are blaming him for every other problem in the world.
What the French are blaming him for, is for promising so much and delivering so little.

He's French they eat garden slugs For Funks Sake! Camel, looxury!
Zoo's are vital these days, they save so many animals from extinction and a great source of education for all.
Not sure why they gave him a bloody camel in the first place. He lives in the centre of Paris for goodness sake...wouldn't a nice matching tie and handkerchief been more appropriate ?
Reminds me of a quote by the famous huntsman John Peel, who on being given a horse said, "God rot a present wot eats".
