To those who have just seen the Labour Party Election Broadcadt just now - anyone impressed, or did it just leave you slack-jawed?

@ SP - Not sure I see the "breathtaking cynicism" you talk about?

An admission of failure over immigration policy in the previous administration, and acknowledgement that it is an important issue for many - and some suggestions to counter unregulated immigration for the future. Now, you may argue about the suggestions, but where is the cynicism, unless you think they do not "really" believe it?

If changing your mind in response to the changing political landscape is cynical, every single political party ever has been guilty of it...

@SP well, if you don't believe they are sincere, then I can see why you might think it is breathtaking cynicism.

The test will be how they frame their responses to the various debates on immigration, what recommendations and suggestions they come up with, and what manifesto commitments they make.

Tony Blair was warning Ed Milliband not to "veer to the right on immigration" and "veer to the left on economic policy" - comments echoed by Mandelson and another Blairite, so they obviously attach some gravity to the comments being made.

And this commentary about an admission of failure over immigration policies is not brand new - they have been saying the same thing for a couple of months now...

I guess we will get a better idea come the run in to the GE in 2015...

LazyGun - I think it's for the forthcoming elections in May. It was billed as a 'Party Election Broadcast'.

Not sure (without Googling) what elections are coming up.

If Labour can pull this off and convince Tory/UKIP voters that they have genuinely changed their stance on immigration, then it will be the political coup of the decade...perhaps even beating the 'We really love the gays now...honest' thing that the Conservative (or at least part of the Conservative) Party are currently feeding us.

He always comes across as insincere, trying too hard to impress. To me Ed will always have 'Career Politician' written across his forehead. I don't think he gives a monkeys about anything, so many U turns he almost up his own backside.

@Sp Your premise upon which you are basing the accusation seems to be that Milliband and Labour are running a spoiler campaign purely for the upcoming local elections, and have selected immigration as the policy du jour. They spout platitudes which they have no intention of honouring or believing.

I would disagree. I think they have listened to various activists and focus groups and advisors who are telling them that the mood in the country has changed a lot, and unless they change too to reflect that, they will not stand any chance of making an impact come the next general election.

The test of their sincerity will come when they publish their manifesto in the lead-in the the general election in 2015

I have just watched it on my iPad (it worked fine for me).

It was not cynical. After failing to win the last election, the Labour Party had to change. This shows they have. To get re-elected they need to make these noises even though we all know that the Government of whatever flavour is largely powerless to restrict movement of EU member citizens.
