A coroner has criticised the media over the "character assassination" of a transgender teacher who later took her own life.

Ms Meadows had complained to the Press Complaints Commission about harassment and an article in the Daily Mail by columnist Richard Littlejohn questioning her right to teach, the inquest in Blackburn was told.

Mr Singleton [the coroner], however, said he was appalled at the "sensationalist and salacious" media intrusion she had faced.

This is "newspaper" at the forefront of the campaign to sidestep the results of the Leveson Enquiry and set up its own version of a media watchdog.

Isn't it time that the Leveson recommendations were implemented in full?

Not sure that abusively misnaming it helps us; after all, the very words Daily Mail mean something beyond the literal, just as, for example, 'groundhog day' does. We can condemn someone's account by saying "That's a bit Daily Mail ".

Littlejohn is a shock jock in print. Surely he can't believe everything he writes? He certainly won't be taking responsibility for the consequences.

I'm not sure it was exactly "taking the Daily Mail's side" exactly. On the other hand, again, I find it difficult to believe that this article was anything more than straw and camel again for the poor woman. I think a lot of people were saying the same. As to whether or not she should have stayed at the same school -- well, I think the parents will have had more trouble than most of the children.

You know, Michael Singleton, the Coroner in this case was present in the courtroom and everybody else here on AB wasn't, so why are we questioning his judgement ? Who on AB thinks that they can gainsay a professional person doing his job ?

His closing words, according to this mornings Guardian were " And to you the Press, I say shame, shame on all of you "

Because we have free speech and the UK prides itself as a democracy.

However, the bottom line is that you are quite correct, but what would happen to the conversation in the pubs and clubs throughout the country if questioning "professionals" ceased.

The Birmingham Six? The surgeon operating on the wrong leg? The referee missing a clear penalty?

They are all fallible and their decisions always open for discussion.

You are quite right sqad, of course and I had no intention of trying to stifle debate. I am not sure that I was but if it came over that way, then I must apologise.

But I am finding the nasty nature of some debates here on AB more and more difficult to stomach. Much as I dislike the DM, calling it silly and juvenile names like Daily Arsewipe adds very little to our understanding of this very sad case. I am sure that the Coroner would not have made the unusual and remarkably outspoken comments that he did without good reason. The media can destroy people in their persuit of Press Freedom, and the DM is, after all, a mass market publication.
