If computers and broadband and WWW is a right not a luxury then maybe we all ought to have free ones.
On the other hand if it is not a right, then maybe the poor have to go where society offers a desired service, such as the local library, rather than expect more personal freebies.
I can understand the benefit of offering the service to citizens, but not a personal one for the home. There are limits to how bountiful government should be with our money.

I say no. As said previously, some workers are on low wages and manage to afford it. As for needing it for getting jobs etc, the library here has about 10 computers available, 5 of them are in the childrens library and are quite easy to get onto when school is on. Its like saying once they get a job and they need a car to get there, just give them one. I think you have to work up to getting these things by working hard !! not expecting everything handed to you on a plate.

100% agree with you theotherhalf.
As for the disabled surely it would be better if the gov didn't cut their benefits and tax (yes I know it's not technically a tax) them for any extra bedrooms rather than spending £££££'s on doling out freebie computers?

Defo Yes - give them away free! More valuable & sensible expenditure than much foreign "aid" which is then spent on armaments.
Computer skills are a vital advantage for those seeking jobs - not just applying but succeeding in getting many jobs. The internet is now a better way of acquiring useful knowledge than TV or books - i.e. education.
It might well help a child-minding parent, hence "unemployed", to work from home.
Also gives tools to budding entrepreneurs.
Better still if games, gambling, porn-sites blocking-technology were available but that's a wider society issue.
Amusing (?) note: many company board-directors still don't know how to switch a computer on but think it's vital that their staff have computer skills.

The point that all you Righties seems to have missed in your rush to condemn the underpriveleged is that this is a Capitalist Initiative by corporate giant Microsoft to force their creaking software on a larger user base (just like they did with IE being given away free to put the superior product Netscape out of business).
This sort of bullying "loss leading" is becoming ever more common - capture the market with rates which can't be beaten then later on up go the costs.
Nothing to do with more "sponging off the State", merely one of Cameron's sponsors creating a bigger monopoly.

/// AOG - just for your information, Daffy was answering DJHawkes regarding benefit payments. ///
And just for your information it is not against AB rules to intervene on another's post, just like you have done here.
And I still stand by my observation that no one said anything about 'post office payment books'.

I mean how can anyone living on only £2,000 per month possibly afford a computer?

Many of these answers have tory fingerprints all over them.
Tory thinking:
(1) Don't subsidise the under-priveleged or they might improve and I will lose my sense of superiority.
(2) I worked and saved for all I got, everyone else should be the same as me even if life/society has dealt them a bum hand.
(3) Never spend money on anyone unless I get the same or more.
Me, SIQ: Sure I worked for everything that I've got, not a penny inherited. However I recognise that the state kick-started me with my education as did my parents and society's high standards. Thatcher destroyed society's high standards because she didn't believe in "society" just in everyone for themselves.
It's time we gainers from our hard work helped kick-start the underdogs to better themselves. That's how I want my taxes spent so we can rebuild GREAT Britain!
