Not in their headline they didn't.

But somehow the Mail thought that was the most vital information in the whole story and just had to be right at the top.

Of course it wouldn't have prompted a thread on AB any other way.

HHJ Barbara Mensah was only appointed in 2009 so she is, presumably , still sitting because judges are expected to serve 15 years. She sits in the Crown Court .With the retirement this year of the one black woman High Court Judge, she must be the top, black, woman judge. How anyone could describe Constance Briscoe in terms of her being a judge, let alone a top one, when she has only ever been a barrister in practice who happens to be allowed to sit as a judge for a few weeks a year, generally as a relief judge, only trying very minor cases, is not immediately apparent.

The absence of women in the judiciary is also notable. Typically women only represent about 5 per cent of the judiciary at any given level or type of court. Their highest representation is about one third, found at the level of the professional magistrates and, on the civil side, in such jobs as costs masters.

Back when Constance was peddling her mis-lit she was always described as Britains first black, female judge.
Praised as a role model for black teenagers and a poster-girl for multiculturalism.
Now it transpires she's a liar and a fantasist, we're told, in a move that Stalin would have baulked at, we must not refer to her as black,female or indeed a judge.

This story appears to have been spun into hubris for those concerned - hubris being a veritable cornerstone of the Mail's philosophy on just about anything it reports.

However - looking deeper, the proposed spun story is that a woman judge has lied for her friend, wheras the reality is starting to shake down into something differen, along the lines of - Recorder has made genuine error.

This will be interesting to follow.

anyone who knows a Judge - sorry leads an existence near a Judge whilst they waft like Cardinals on their way to a conclave, scented handkerchieves held disdainfully to their noses - will be surprised she didnt just say to Vickey Noli me tangere and leave it at that.

COnviction means she will lose her Judges' pension which is big big big I can tell you

and so far as i recall, no one on here has expressed any such view

so the evidence suggests that this notion is nothing more than a figment of your imagination and reflects some hang up or fixation that you are suffering from

PP, she is no danger of losing her judge's pension . She is not a judge. I appreciate that the Daily Mail headline describes her as the "top black woman judge" but that's the Daily Mail being the Daily Mail; four words used. of which two are wrong.

Scented handkerchief? Judges at the Old Bailey are given a nosegay to bring into court. Not all do so. Is this another cutback? The Recorder of London and the Common Serjeant generally still do. As they are the two permanent judges there, one might have thought that they'd be used to the smell by now (the tradition started when the smell from the prison next door, and the cells beneath, was a little pungent).

You don't however see the white gloves any more. These were not for hygiene but presented to the judge on circuit when he arrived at a town and there were no prisoners for him to try. There were two senior Crown Court judges who brought white gloves in to court sometimes. This was no tradition. It was a signal that they were in a hurry and wanted to get away that day!
