Down here on the coast, we'd ban them but for another reason - they sail out to sea, and the lifeboat has gone out on several occasions as they are easily confused with distress signal flares.
A neighbouring farmer lost £5000 worth of hay last year because some pillock in the village thought it would be nice to set some lanterns loose on his 40th birthday.

i was watching the news earlier, it was on a celebration, not sure what exactly, in Poland, and there were thousands of the things being let go, what a nightmare for aircraft...

It seems almost impossible to conduct any discussion here these days without someone bringing 'race' into it. For Gawd's sake! Stick with Chinese Lanterns - unless of course, being Chinese, that's racist too. ;o)

I mean its a pretty stupid idea isn't it, set fire to something and let it go...if it was thuggy types doing it with rags and a coathanger there would be all hell to pay, but because its a marketed product its "ok"....how stupid is that?
Having had part of our garden set on fire by one, I can't say I'm in favour of the things at all. The idiots down the road who set it off didn't realise there was any risk until a couple of fire engines turned up to put the fire out.
sp China, until recently was a lot less populated than the UK, more open space, less aircraft overhead, less busy sea lanes, less care about pets, livestock and wildlife and who cares if you trash a peasant farmer's crop or burn down his house?
