// But that [would] entail us regaining absolute control of our borders and we mustn't have that, must we? //

That is what the present shower promised we would get 3 years ago, but alas it was all lies and waffle.

They said, "We will get immigration down to the tens of thousands rather than the hundreds of thousands". They lied and immigration is still at the hundreds of thousands mark.

But NJ and his ilk defend the failed empty promises and lies anyway.
Guess what chrisgel, I know that there are a lot of them out there. But I doubt whether a man who believed he could chastise his wife "lightly", "wife-beating", would be refused entry to the US
for those not in the know, Malta is a wonderful place, has been occupied by many peoples over millennia. It has charming people, and good food, British occupying the place, well so they did, it's a massively important strategic area in matters of war, so why wouldn't we. If Malta had fallen who knows what might have happened. They deserved the George Cross. not sure why some think that it wasn't well thought on.

Thanks Em10.
that was someone's response that they didn't care for the matter of the George Cross, or our presence there, i rather beg to differ. Fabulous place, Malta, Gozo, Cimino. all worth a visit, for the history and the lovely people
Good grief the pedants are out on this thread, over Malta as to the sea......really, wouldn't have him landing on someone called George and, yes, I have enjoyed my visits there though I wouldn't want to live in Valetta or around it
nor me Valetta is lovely but too busy,
Gromit, //They said, "We will get immigration down to the tens of thousands rather than the hundreds of thousands". They lied and immigration is still at the hundreds of thousands mark. //

Now I'm confused. You're complaining about something that I thought might have pleased you.
the more the merrier apparently...

(good morning)

Malta is a lovely island - i lived there for three years as a child when my late father was in the airforce and posted out there
i went back there for a holiday, a few years ago, and i had a great time
I watched a rather in-depth documentary about Malta’s role in WWII, and my – how those stalwart people suffered! That island fully deserves our thanks - and our respect.

I am in favour of immigration controls as long as it does not prevent talented people from coming here, and as long as businesses are not hampered in their recruitment.

But when the Conservatives made that election pledge, (to cut from hundreds of thousands to tens of thousands) they knew they couldn't deliver on it because of EU treaties (and others). It was a blatant lie, which is why I remind people of it whenever it is appropriate.
Gromit, //which is why I remind people of it whenever it is appropriate. //

... or whenever it suits your agenda. ;o)
the Labour party has a lot to answer for, read Mandelsohn and indeed Alistair Campbells views on immigration, the more the merrier, potential labour voters, the coalition hasn't done what it promised either, but you know what i still wouldn't vote Labour, they have summarily trashed the country beyond measure. We need educated people, our own preferably, not more imported, unless they have the skills that no one else can offer.

to get back to the issue raised by the O P

qatada is now gone, next step - hamsa
well immigration numbers are down unlike during the bedlam years of the Labour government in all its different colours...they are the ones to answer for the mess we are in. Go for it David and Theresa and gets some sensible controls in......the point that gromit made about not detering talent is a valid one.
I have an agenda?

Having never been a member or supporter of any political party, Union or pressure group, I wonder toward what ends you believe I have an agenda?

I just have opinions, which are generally different to yours.
Abu Hamza is in the USA i believe.
we have plenty of talented youngsters, why can't they find jobs.
DTCwordfan

Immigration is down slightly but that is not because of any policy change or tightening of our borders (because there has been any). It is because our economy has been stagnant for 3 years and there are NO new jobs for them to com to.

The Bulgarians and Romanians are allowed to come here next year. Let's see if immigration stays down over the 5 years of this Government before we start to get the bunting out.
