Trespassing is now a criminal offence so surely the Police can simply evict them straight away. So why does it take so long to get shot of them?

They've outlawed squatting, so why not now outlaw travellers, surely it is out of date now in the 21st century?

We seem unable to deal with this problem, I don't often agree with the French but I think the French public have the right idea here:

So have the Irish I believe
Rather than being terrible at it I think we are too scared.
or this, apparently there was an amnesty and free flights home were on offer, some took it, however one chap said he has nothing there, he has nothing here, so he is staying here. And some have come back again, after the camp was cleared, this is Hyde Park

There used to be some land near to where I live where travellers often camped on. It was a nightmare. They used to urinate and defecate along the picturesque river path, steal from people's back gardens and woe betide you if you tried to reason with them, threats of violence were rife !! Thankfully the land has now been developed, but it used to take weeks to get them off, weeks during which nobody used to like leaving their homes.
"So why does it take so long to get shot of them?"

From your link, it seems the reason is that the 'gypsy and traveller liaison officer was on holiday at the time'. How about that for timing!

even if he was about it still takes at least a week. Personally I'd go and confiscate their Porsches and Mercs to pay for the clear up and move them on within a few hours.
The thing that complicates the issue is that there are many travelers that are not of this ilk. There is (or at least was) a very large contingent of travelers who actually care about the land and leave little or no trace, many of whom are educated family people who chose this way of life and dedicated part of the lifestyle to road protesting and campaigning against the destruction of places of outstanding natural beauty. It would be nice if we could acknowledge the difference. The main problem is that there is just so little space in this over populated country. A lot of the (so called) New Age Travelers got so pissed off with the new land occupation rules that they all sodded off to Spain where this lifestyle was more readily tolerated.

It wouldn't be so bad if they respected where they stayed and didn't theive everything that's not nailed down and leave ton of cr&p. Lets send the whole lot to Spain.
Think you will find that, as an old judge put it, a notice "Trespassers will be prosecuted " is "a wooden lie". Trespassing is not a criminal offence; indeed it is barely actionable as a civil matter; and never was.

What is, is trespassing and remaining in a building which is a dwelling. This property is not a building which is a dwelling

Backhanders from whom? Travellers? Why do they need to waste money on that? It's a risky strategy for all concerned and the law is so slow that the trespassers could be there for ages.

Don't quite get how the EU are bribing policemen not to act, Rob. Please explain.

no idea, but some certainly seem to be undesirables, one lady offered me a gold ring she found on the floor, almost outside my front door, it wasn't mine, nor was it gold. I read about this scam a little while ago, not to mention those standing behind you at the ATM, looking at the pin numbers, so i tend to go into the bank now.
That is something I will never understand, pussyfooting about when people make your lives a misery. Stealing and rubbishing property would not be tolerated if you did it, but if a group of strangers camped up and decided to do it, nothing is done for ages because of human rights etc..
I agree with the French, a straight in and out job, no messing.
