Well she was stupid enough to let his girlfriend live with them !.

For once I am with you entirely on this Mickey.
Question Author
ummmm...where would you like me to start ?

Philpott was a pervert. The kids lived in a house where was taking it in turns to sleep with either his wife or his girlfriend, or sometime both at once. He was a convicted criminal with a very violent past. He terrorised not just his family but his neighbours as well.

Is the man that should be allowed to be in charge of 11 children ?
Question Author
YMB...thanks ! I am blushing ! Please allow me to return the compliment to you one day.
I have no sympathy for her, yes she may have been controlled by him, yes she may be of limited intelligence, but how stupid must one be to see a fire going out of control and doing nothing,
Does having a wife and a mistress make someone a pervert? In some cultures it's acceptable to have more than one wife.

Many people have dubious pasts but that doesn't mean that they make bad parents.

I assume social services were involved at some point and despite their lifestyle deemed the children not to be at risk.
Question Author
Then the social services were stupid and lacking in care for these poor children. Do you really seriously think that having a caravan in your drive and installing your mistress in it and then taking turns to sleep with her and your wife is in any way acceptable ? In what culture would this be acceptable exactly ? He lived in Derby, not some mud hut in the jungle. When he was in the hotel suite while being interviewed by the Police prior to the trial, he had sex with his wife and the other man convicted in the affair...this was recorded by the Police.

He was a dangerous pervert...no more, no less.

This horrible man gave plenty of notice that he was completely unsuitable to look after 11 children. Watch the Widdecombe program on Youtube, and his appearance on the awful Jeremy Kyle program. He was violent towards his neighbours as well as his wife. He is also accused of raping a woman, which the Police are investigating.

He was a thoroughly bad person and I repeat again....if the children had been taken into care and a place of safety, they would still be alive today.
Mikey - I agree with you but isn't hindsight a wonderful thing?

I think his (admittedly dim) wife is being given rather to easy a ride here, because of Philpott's undoubted vile, manipulative and dangerous nature.

Ultimately she didn't act to prevent her own children being in a house which she helped set on fire ...
Did she actually help? Or was it that she did nothing to stop it?
I wonder if there has been any sort of inquiry about why the Philpott children were not taken into care.
Semantics, ummmm - failing to stop someone with a can of petrol and a lighter is pretty much the same as lighting it yourself - which is what the courts thought.
Im not sure people living in mud huts in the jungle routinely have caravans on their drives in which they install mistress's.....

their personal life, whilst distasteful to some, is exactly that, their personal life and not for you or anyone else to judge.

He was a horrible man and i hope he rots in prison for what he did - that's all i'll judge him for
Failing to stop someone because you're in on it and failing to stop someone because you're too scared to, are different.
Thanks chelle, I'm glad to see that something is being done, whether any heads will roll for this though remains to be seen.
Question Author
Hindsite wasn't needed Ummmmm, that's my point. All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men and women to do nothing. Everybody just stood around and did nothing !

I have no sympathy whatsoever for his stupid wife. She had plenty of opportunities to make her escape, as the equally stupid mistress eventually did. But she lacked the moral fibre and, probably intelligence, to do anything other than allow herself to be impregnated by this horrible man, time after time. She was no more than a baby factory. She deserves all the criticism that has been levelled against her. She played her part in the murder of her own children, and will have to live with the memory of that for the rest of her life.

It might seem that I am going over the top somewhat on this case but it upset more than I can tell. Right from the start, in May 2012 when the news first broke about the fire and the deaths, I was immediately suspicious. The whole affair stunk to high heaven as soon as it became clear that Philpott was involved. I remember the crocodile tears at the press conference only too clearly.

I am not a violent man and I do not support the death penalty returning to Britain. But I would gladly strangle Philpott with my bare hands. Perhaps someone will in prison one day...he deserves nothing less.
That as may be Ummm, but I can't help thinking that if its your children you would overcome all that fear to try to save them. She simply didn't do anything but stand in the garden watching.
I haven't read anything to suggest that the children were neglected or abused.

Children can't be taken away from their parents because someone from SS perceives the father to be a complete *** or because they live a lifestyle that most people can't comprehend.

Like Fluff says, I hope he rots, but we have to remember that he didn't intend to kill his children.
Octavius - I'm not defending her. I'm glad her appeal was rejected. I just don't think she is evil.
Question Author
mccfluff. Most of your post is pure drivel. His personal life led to the murder of his children. You might think that his lifestyle was OK'ish but I do not. He wasn't a fit person to look after children, an assertion that was born out by the eventual crime itself. We turn the other cheek to much these days. I still maintain that he was a dangerous pervert and the Social Services should have intervened in time. Instead they did nothing.
