This seems to have aggrieved enough people that the pub were forced to close, fearing for the safety of their staff.

Just suppose for a moment that they actually had banned the military. It's their pub, their rules. Why shouldn't they bar certain groups of potential customers, if that's what is required or demanded by local users?

they can if they want. Plenty of pubs ban horny-handed sons of toil in their labouring garb, so as not to upset their fastidious middle-class clientele.

But in this case it doesn't seem as if it was demanded by local users, nor did they actually want to do it.
I see that it's all been a hoax but.....what if a serving member of the forces was black and gay?
Could an establishment still bar him?
you can ban individuals but it had better not be because he was black and gay.
You also cannot ban someone because they are white or straight.

People assume the equality laws only work one way.

They don't.
Am I to understand then that there would be no law broken if a gay, black soldier was refused service in an establishment with a block ban on members of the military and because said ban was in place there would be no recourse to a charge of discrimination on the grounds of race or sexual orientation?
yes.
Thank you.
No, you'd lose the licence for the pub premises, or your job if you were the person responsible, if you had a stated rule that every soldier was prevented from entering at all. You are entitled to take one look at an individual, or one group, and refuse them. That's a subtlety, but reflects the reality. If you had a rule that no soldier was to enter you'd be barring the whole army, from Generals to Privates.
Yes, you could bar a serving member if he was black or gay, so long as your reason for doing so was not that he was black or gay.
I don't think there's anything at the moment to stop you banning servive personnel - in fact I think the government is looking at bringing in leislation to change that.

Clever hoax that - Landlord obviously upset someone

A member of the armed forces perhaps

Nut jobs. Don't waste your time with the 'About Us' button. That just says they are not the EDL.
gromit...just had a look at the Daily Bale website. Appalling and racist. But I fear that some uneducated people, the sort that are normally attracted to the rubbish like this, might take it seriously. I have warned about the rise of the ultra-right on AB in the past. We ignore them at our peril.

Hitler, Mussolini and Mosley were very successful in the 30's without the use of the internet. Just think what this lot could achieve today. Very disturbing.
