On live now, Obama confirms US will take action, but will seek permission from Congress before doing so.

interesting speech, wonder what congress will say..

Very impassioned, puts his case very eloquently and justifiably.
Might Congress say 'no' too? The Republicans might jump at a chance to do a House of Commons on him.
it is, however this could well be another blow up, a George W again, and the American people will not thank him for involving the US in another war, in whatever way it might occur.
The person can not win whichever way he goes, there are lives getting lost by another dictator, someone has to step in and stop this throughout the world, diplomacy does not seem to work, Assad army live in fear of the crank, which way would you go? I do remember Gaddafi>>Saddam & also the unessary loss of lives, there is only one State that has the armour, there is only one State that can do the Job.

Obama did what Cameron failed to do i.e. made it perfectly clear that there will not be 'boots on the ground' under any circumstances.
IMHO Cameron didn't give enough detail nor assurances about what he planned by way of a response, which sunk him.
well, that's interesting. he is not going to jump in too quickly !!!!!!!!!!
Unable to see the 'club' Thanks to you all. feel rather foolish now. Ho hum
Sorry for the response. it was supposed to be in crosswords!!
They do say that the Satellites that each Country has up in space can read a daily Newspaper on every street in the World, why can they not pin point Assad & get rid. or is it not that simple?
Do you know with absolute certainty that it was Assad's regime that used the gas TWR? if so then you are the only person in the world (apart from those who actually did it) who has this info.
The Republicans are in disarray at the moment. They are unlikely to be able to use this simply to challenge his authority.
Anyway good for Obama. A bold decision: in fact 2 bold decisions. I don't doubt some congressional reps at least will be made privy to perhaps semi-sanitised versions of the intelligence referred to by Mr Kerry yesterday
Why do western countries continue to try and 'westernise' the Middle East? It has been going on since the 11th century and has singularly failed each and every time. Why continue to do the same thing and continue to expect a different outcome? There's more than enough fire power and finance in the region to resolve the problem amongst the Arabic Nations by those same nations if, they feel as strongly about the situation, as western countries.
I think we are civilised Beejee.
exactly my point about these supposed chemical weapons, did Assad's men unleash them on his people, or did the rebels, because if there is doubt, how can they simply go in and bomb Assad and his regime. Whilst Obama says no boots on the ground, if they do get rid of Assad, what happens after?
Have to question whether the vote of the British parliament influenced his decision. Does he feel that although France is America's oldest ally, it isn't necessarily the strongest or the most influential.
^^ *?*
Obama has the right to take action without the sanction of Congress. From what I have seen, the American public are as tired of interventions into Mid East conflicts as we are in the UK. It will be interesting to see what happens but if there is a vote in Congress, I think the result will be very close.
