They are, nonetheless, accepted as having the name for all related purposes for the duration of the election. Defendants have a similar right. In practice this hardly makes a difference. Prosecuting counsel will open the case by saying that the defendant is , say, Mr Smith who prefers to be known as [name offered] and will then call him Mr Smith, as will the witnesses, throughout.
