On Sky News it looks like they have huge amounts of police (and other security services) there!

Sounds like someone tried to ram the White House gates then ran towards Capitol Hill and shots were fired. A police officer injured from what I caught.

Fox News claiming that a female has possibly been shot dead.

Ongoing, it's now believed that there is a child in the car, apparently unharmed.
I'm still watching the coverage, must admit I was surprised to hear it is alleged to be a woman. Hadn't heard about a child in the car!

Awful to hear there sound like injuries.
sounz awful
but thank God something will displace these awful child murder cases.

I have to turn the sound off

but somehow I dont mind the sound of gun-fire on Capitol Hill
I hope the recent budget disagreement has left them short of bullets.
Good point gran
America. Short of bullets. Mmm. Not likely is it.
and still, America wont control the gun laws :(
Her family have just tweeted that she wasnt ramming the White House gates: she wasnt very good at parking.
That can happen Peter. I had a helluva time parking outside our local Wetherspoons tonight what with the rain and that.

American justice....get shot for being a bad driver with depression
-----------------------
That's a bit strong. She had endangered the lives of several security/Police officers and was rampaging at random in a vehicle.
They had very limited options open to them.
They'd already tried to remove her at gunpoint from the car when she decided to make a dash for it and nearly run one of them over.
Her actions in that specific location only exacerbated matters, unfortunately.
Shot dead and not a weapon in sight, can you imagine that happening in Britain?

Well, if you ^^^ don't consider a Chair-leg to be a weapon!

/// Harry Stanley, who was shot dead in 1999 while carrying a chair leg ... Neither officer has returned to active firearms duties since the shooting.//
I shudder to think what weapon James Ashley had in his hand when he was shot:

//(wiki)The raid occurred in St Leonards, East Sussex, United Kingdom, on 15 January, 1998. Ashley had been in bed with his girlfriend at the time of the raid, and got out of bed to investigate noises coming from the flat. As he moved towards the door of his darkened bedroom an armed police officer stepped into the room. Seeing Ashley approaching and having been briefed that the occupants of the flat could be "armed and dangerous", the officer reacted by firing his weapon at Ashley.

At a subsequent press conference, the Chief Constable of Sussex Police, Paul Whitehouse, claimed that James Ashley had been wanted for murder but this was not correct.

An enquiry was held into the incident and Sir John Hoddinott, the Chief Constable of Hampshire Constabulary later found "suggestive evidence of collusion between some or all of the chief officers of the Sussex force to conceal what they already knew, and that an arguable case of attempting to pervert the course of justice might be made out."

Hoddinott also said that there was evidence of criminal malfeasance and falsehood, neglect of duty, discreditable conduct against the Deputy Chief Constable of Sussex, Mark Jordan, and aiding and abetting the false statements of his chief, Paul Whitehouse. Mr. Whitehouse insisted that he bore no responsibility for the events that had occurred but when the Home Secretary, David Blunkett suggested that he resign, he did.//

As I said, to put this in context she had rammed the gates of the White House and attempted to bypass them.
She subsequently used the car to evade capture by officers, placing them in danger as she did so.

Those tasked with security at Capitol Hill reacted with restrain IMHO. They could have stopped her in a hail of gunfire at the first instance. Her subsequent actions left them with very little choice as to how to end the incident.

I wondered that too Baldric. Pretty much guaranteed at that particular location.
