Since the school had not previously put a restriction on what could or what could not be worn, were they out of order in making the pupil remove the said uniform?

Pity this piece was in the Guardian, I am sure if it had been the Daily Mail, they may have shown a photograph on the pupil in the Hitler Uniform complete with a little moustache, instead of just showing us the real thing, as if we had forgotten what Hitler looked like.

Muslim boys could use their facial hair to good advantage by going as Stalin
"they annexed the Sudetenland"

I must get my eyes tested - I read that (TWICE) as

"they annexed Sunderland"

//were they out of order in making the pupil remove the said uniform?//

Yes, I think they were. The theme was WWII. I can't see the problem.
...or a U-Boat Commander
what if the child's parents were German ? What are they supposed to go as if their own family were on the German side in WW2? It's as well thought out as an x factor show
LOL @sunny-dave. The nearest the Germans got in the North was when they bombarded Scarborough, from the sea, in the Great War, which gave rise to recruitment posters reading "Remember Scarborough!", a statement which I initially took as being from the local tourist board.
Its this kind of banter that makes AB a gem;

""they annexed the Sudetenland"

I must get my eyes tested - I read that (TWICE) as

"they annexed Sunderland""
From Sunny Dave ( probably because I made exactly the same error)

And Freds response;

"The nearest the Germans got in the North was when they bombarded Scarborough, from the sea, in the Great War, which gave rise to recruitment posters reading "Remember Scarborough!", a statement which I initially took as being from the local tourist board"

Oh and Zacs rather excellent comment about invasions and the Poles :) !

The little lad must be tremendously worthy is all I can say; As a 10 year old with a rudimentary knowledge of the cliff notes of WW2 the very last thing I would want to dress up as were I in his position would be the leader of the losers and something of a hate figure.

I am also quite surprised that the mother was seemingly very sanguine about the choice her son was making, helping with the moustache etc.

I can also imagine that, had the school not made a fuss when he showed up in that outfit, some of the media would likely have made a big story out of that too, had it come to light

why surprised, LazyGun? I always welcomed it when jno jnr applied some lateral thinking (as he often did and does) and didn't simply default to the obvious answer and the majority line. I wouldn't have suggested he go as Hitler but I'd certainly have supported him if he'd chosen to.
/I wouldn't have suggested he go as Hitler but I'd certainly have supported him if he'd chosen to. /

Ah... much like the German people jno
I explained my surprise, didnt I, jno? As a parent myself I would always encourage independent and lateral thought in kids,certainly, but were I in that parents shoes and my child had come to me asking for help in dressing up as Hitler, I would have dissuaded them, I think, because of the reasons I have already given.

It seems very obvious to me that a 10 year old dressing up as Hitler is always going to be controversial. Maybe I am in the minority :)
He could have gone as the thirties edition of Lord Rothermere in a Nazi uniform.
Sort of seeing both sides :-)

I don't agree with the school on this, if the information available is correct.
Hitler was democratically elected, yes, Zeuhl.
The story is actually from the Sun, the Guardian are commenting on it. There is a link in the piece to the Sun article complete with photograph.

He looks good as a Littler.

Agree the school should have specified if they did not want any enemy uniforms.

On a much lighter note, he could have gone dressed up as a dam, and I'm sure that Sqad would have taken enormous pleasure out of swooping into the classroom and busting the hell out of the little tyke:)

Lots of nazis looked like hitler, it was the fashion then in germany. He could have been anybody(almost) :o)
Or as an Enigma machine; then the party would have ended two years earlier.
Perhaps it was just his little moustache they objected to. There's a school in Accrington where they don't allow beards.
Is that really his name?...A bit unfortunate in the circumstances.
