In the poll 67% want drastic action.
This is rather worrying. We all know immigration is necessary, but because of a terrible New labour experiment, lax rules, ECHR rulings and a useless border agency we are now in this situation.
If this poll is right is not just the Tories problem even if the left crow over Farage being the thorn in Camerons side, it would appear he may well appeal to others too.
This could lead to far right extremism and the sort of thing Mickey has posed just below which no right minded person wants, so will out leaders do something about it rather than just trying to score points over each other? This has now gone well beyond silly party squabbling.
We need a sensible policy which we can take the cream of those who want to come to help build our country and also allows us to help those in genuine need that is not interfered with by the likes of Europe, both the ECHR and the EU.

That's a rather stupid thing to believe. If anything, it isn't big enough. Germany has 80.5million, France is about the same as us.
I hadn't realised the Conservatives had raised their target for immigration. They said they would get immigration down to the tens of thousands annually. They now seem to be aiming at 100,000 (but not achieving that either).
At the election, immigration is never a major concern when the electorate cast their vote. There is no reason to think 2015 will be any different.

Surprisingly ymb, I agree with you ! Of course we need a sensible immigration policy.
But UKIP is not about immigration. The clue is in its name, its the United Kingdom Independence Party. They were formed with but one intention...to get Britain out of Europe. Farage has said on numerous occasions that if they can achieve this, then they will have done their job. He also admits that UKIP has no chance of forming the next Government of Britain. So I fail to see the point of voting for them.
The recent YouGov poll shows that support for them is not growing, despite all the talk on here and in general about them. They are stuck on about 11% ::

They will, despite their low Poll, have an effect on the outcome of the next General Election in May 2015, by mostly taking voters away from the Tories, thus resulting in a better chance for a Labour win.

If i lived in the UK, I would have little interest in the immigration statistics of France or Germany.

I agree with mikey.
Come Election Day, the test will be.."Do I feel better off?" and "Is there recovery in the Economy"
To me it is that simple.

Population density of a whole country is an amazingly daft thing to quote
How does the population density in Scotland or Cornwall affect you?
Population density only makes sense in a local context
Paris for example has a huge population density I'm sure they feel much better knowing that over all of France it's much lower than the UK
Over population is a local issue
Some parts of the country cannot support additional population - other parts are still pretty sparse
The problem is not supporting more people - it's getting people to spread out.

Will our politicians get the message?
// For example, 71% of people who live in the countryside think drastic action is needed, compared with 53% in urban areas. //
The message I see there is that the Conservative shires are unhappy, and the urban Labour voting areas are 50/50.
It is unlikely that the Coalition can make a dent in the immigration figures in the next 16 months. The Conservative's policy at the last election has failed spectacularly.
As I say, it won't be an election issue, but if it were, the Conservatives would be in big trouble.

Agree with Sqad; the test is "You've never had it so good" at best, and "Are you better off than you were before this government?" at worst. It is nearly always "It's the economy, Stupid!". Immigration is only these questions reframed. People assume that the immigration makes them poorer, rather than just objecting to foreigners. The idea is that immigrants take the jobs, which wouldn't matter much if the economy was booming, or they live off the resident taxpayers.

And rather an arrogant view from you on the other hand? You are clearly not understanding the majority, but then the center left never does, they just believe they are right and everyone else is wrong.
It's beliefs like your that have got us into the mess. We somehow need to change perceptions but putting people down in that high handed manner will only worsen it.

I think you will find that it was Gromit that put your own words into his response ymg, not me.
If you recall, I was agreeing with you in your view that we need a sensible immigration policy, so I am not sure why you are having a go at me yet again, rather than the others that have replied to your post that disagree with you.
Also not sure what was arrogant in what I have said...again, I was agreeing with your central point. Curiouser and curiouser !
We all entitled to our view on here you know ymg. Why do you have to spit so much vitriol at people that have different views to your own ?

Yes, Sqad, but will they be all Chinese jobs, filled largely by Triad gangsters ? After all, new jobs as chefs and waiters in Chinese restaurants go to Chinese people and a Chinese business centre creating 20,000 jobs will certainly be filled with 20,000 Chinese immigrants. That's right, isn't it Hawksley?
What I would like to ask all those who seem to be happy with the huge influx of immigrants.
Have we space in the areas that they choose to settle?
Have we enough houses to shelter them?
Have we enough jobs so as to employ them all?
Have we enough schools to educate their children?
Have we enough maternity care for them?
Have we enough hospitals for them?
Have we enough NHS resources for them?
Have we enough interpreters, social workers etc to look after their needs?
And finely apart from those who can bring valuable skills into this country, why do we need the rest?
Sensible answers would be appreciated.

"Filled largely by Triad gangsters"????????????
What a ridiculous silly statement to make, the government won't be attracting the riff-raff of the Chinese nation, just as past governments have done with the gangsters, drug pushes, human-slavers, child groomers, knife and gun killers they have already let into this country, no they are after the guys with the money who are prepared to invest their money into this country.

And if that was right which you can't claim it will be so, how different is it to the other Asians from the Indian sub continent, do you see many of the indigenous population of this country employed in their restaurants, fast food outlets and clothing factories?
