Should the referee have suspended play? What other measures can stop this?

No. People don't like being discriminated against. Black, Asian, Ginger, Cock eyed.....we are all human beings.
// Has there ever been calls for action to be taken because a particular white player has been abused verbally by the crowd? //

Mr Cantona dealt with racists in the crowd in his own special way.
Unfortunately its been going on for decades and not only in football.
I don't think it will ever stop whatever action is taken.
aog

don't start dragging up all the terrible things that used to happen to bald people

We know all about the bald people who were bought and sold, chained up, raped, mutilated, worked to death or lynched - just because their follicles were different to ours

Even in recent years bald people were segregated from others or denied jobs, accommodation etc etc

'No dogs, no irish, no slap heads' (please forgive my use of the 's word')

it's all in the past now - why won't some of you people let it go?
lol....
AOG, there is no difference at all, in principle. You say that people subject to racist abuse should be thick- skinned (and, before you say that you never used those words, kindly address the meaning of what you said. I am not interested in the vocabulary only in what you meant). They should ignore it or laugh it off. And the same should apply to other insults.

There are laws against racism . Do you approve of those? And how does racism manifest itself? So far as I know, there is no such thing as Aogism; any insult to you is entirely to the one person and not manifesting the hatred of a class of people (We might conclude that there is Dailymailism, but that, unfortunately has logic behind it)

But, as you abide so well by your own principle, we can be assured that you always present a thick skin or laugh off any insult you receive. Does that work ?

Name calling is not discrimination, but preventing black persons etc from various advantages enjoyed by white persons is discrimination and all should be against that.

But the gathering of huge number of people in an arena, some under the influence of alcohol and stirred on by the sheer excitement and support of opposing teams is the fuel for chants, shouts, ridicule and insults ect.
aog, you take umbrage when people correct your spelling, never mind hurling racist abuse at you.
/Name calling is not discrimination/

so name calling at a military repatriation is OK?
jno

/// aog, you take umbrage when people correct your spelling, never mind hurling racist abuse at you. ///

Yes but the difference being, all those who rally around together with their bullying tactics are the same ones who are hypocritical enough to criticise those who do the same against certain others.

Also there are no special laws to protect me from abuse.
//Also there are no special laws to protect me from abuse//

Really?
there are, the same laws protect you as well AOG
Booze is to blame, AOG? Are you familiar with "in [or "e"] vino veritas", "in/from wine is truth" ? That a man in drink reveals his true feeiings, beliefs, and ideas?

You think, apparently, that only black people claim the right to be offended. That ignores the right of "Asians" and other races. They claim the right, too. They have laws to stop offence too. So do Jews. Would you have wished a law against anti-Semitic abuse when you were young?
Unless I misremember my history, it is not bald people who have throughout history been the focus of racist taunts, thought to be sub-human or primitive,or lacking the refinement of the white race,or traded as slaves,or segregated through apartheid,or denied citizenship,or disproportionately passed over for jobs,or disproportionately stopped and search through racial profiling - or has it?

Black people have had to endure all this, a lasting legacy and we should be ashamed of members of our society that wish to insult someone purely over the colour of their skin.
"The whole point of this is the fact of why should black persons hold the sole right of being offended, when other persons do not?"

AOG - why do you sometimes resort to writing complete nonsense?

You, for instance, spend about 85% of your time on AB being offended left right and centre.

AOG

Also there are no special laws to protect me from abuse.

Oh for Gods sake. Yes, there is....it's called the Equalities Act.

Again - why do you just make things up?
AOG

"Has there ever been calls for action to be taken because a particular white player has been abused verbally by the crowd?"

No - because in the history of the English league, no crowd has ever taunted a player because he is white.

Ever.
sp1814

/// No - because in the history of the English league, no crowd has ever taunted a player because he is white. ///

But if there were I doubt very much that a white player would go off on one if the crowd taunted him because of his colour.

Why be so conscious of your colour are you not proud to be black? If so flaunt it no matter what idiots shout or mimic.
But white people aren't taunted for their colour so we can only guess what it feels like.
