The Guild of Students banned members of the basketball team, who turned up for a fancy dress party at Hallowe'en wearing ponchos, sombreros and painted- on moustaches, because the stereotype was insulting to Mexicans. (The Guild seemingly ignored a video of their own vice-president wearing a sombrero and directing students to a shop where they could obtain Mexican outfits). They also banned a man dressed as a Red Indian; sorry, "Native American"; who was dressed in homage to the Village People (I bet the YMCA would have let him in).

A 'Guild official" is quoted as saying that dressing up as Mexicans could be seen as "imitation of a culture and [relating] to a stereotype" [The Times, today]

Any comment ? There is no prize for saying "PC gone mad" unless you explain that more fully !

Yes, coke, depressing isn't it ? But fashions come and fashions go, and while this reeks of the 70s, it is new to them. And people of their age always love a cause, however contrived. They mature eventually, until old age sets in. Then they rail with equally absurdity, a second adolescence, if you will.
I'm sure it was Picasso who said - It takes a long time to be young!
