/// if it wasn't for immigrants, I wouldn't get to see a doctor at all; Britain doesn't produce enough of them, and some of those who do become doctors emigrate in search of more money. ///
/// In the 19th Century it was the Jews from Eastern Europe and the Irish who came. After WW11 a lot of Polish people settled here, and more since. People from the Caribbean came and helped keep our health service and transport system running. They've all contributed to our society and we'd be much poorer as a nation without them. ///
The usual excuses and looking back in the history books to try and excuse the enormous mistake of uncontrolled immigration.
jno, perhaps what you say may be quite true but that does not address the total mess that has been caused by not putting some form of limitation on what skills we allow into the country.

Once again your delving into the history books is also quite true, but you have failed to produce the actual numbers of Jews, Irish and Poles who came here, minimal to the vast numbers we are taking in now I suspect, and I also agree regarding those from the Caribbean who came to work in our NHS or drive some of our buses (although this is a bit of a myth, since we managed perfectly well during WW2 when the driving was done by our own women) but taking what you said on board, yes we should invite those into this country that can be beneficial to us, but I am afraid those are in the minority.
It is interesting to note however that you haven't mentioned those from the Indian sub-continent, most of whom have indeed been very beneficial to this county in the roles of Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Opticians, IT etc, etc.
