There is, in fact, no real risk to the public. Well, it is the Daily Mail. It loves scaring its readership, and they enjoy the idea that we are all under threat from alien substances (or people, come to that). If the same story appears in New Scientist or The Times, with proper peer review, I will accept it. How about you, AOG?

will this discovery increase the sale of second hand Erotica ? The D M will wish to know.
AOG it is time you realised that what you read in any of the papers may not necessarily be true.
Particularly interested in the transmission of oral cold sore virus, via a book, purely because I was a tech on:
Letter: Simian viruses. Lancet. 1975 May 3;1(7914):1037–1031. [PubMed]; Vizoso AD. Latency of Herpes Simiae (B virus) in rabbits. Br J Exp Pathol. 1975 Dec .
yes all those years ago
I think we are coming up to forty arent we ?

yes Tilly
The book is what is called a fomite
transmission of oral cold SORES - you know the sore red patch around the mouth - not colds - you know atishoo, a tissue ! - should be by body fluids, sticky hands, kissing etc
then it becomes latent - Herpes SImplex I - by hiding in the nucleus of a neuron in the trigeminal ganglion and is reactivated at intervals. So recurrent cold sores are not reinfections but reactivations.
very very interesting disease - we were looking at latent viruses in the then vaccine stock - we didnt find any - but the same thing came up a gain w r t MMR vaccine last year.
