Given our neighbours legendary propensity for thrift, will there be anyone left in Scotland come the referendum?

No, I am sure they are far better off with independence.

Let's not do anything to put them off.
Scotland should have it's own tax system if it wants to be Independent. Then it doesn't have to bellyache all the time about who gets what.

He will say "a better Scotland can only be achieved by putting the decisions about Scotland's future in the hands of the people of Scotland" and if Scotland votes yes, it would become independent on March 24 2016.

and that includes those non Scots resident in Scotland, oh hum...
I'm thinking of temporarily moving to Scotland so that I can vote "Yes" to independence in the referendum. I would encourage as many English people as possible to do likewise. We can help Mr Salmond achieve his objectives and then promptly move back to England before March 2016 and leave the Scots to wallow in the oil they believe is theirs. Let's hope they find a way of converting it to foodstuffs because they will not have much dosh to buy any from elsewhere.
march 24th 2016 cannot be anything more than an aspiration - it will take far longer than anyone thinks to dis-aggregate 300 years of joint infrastructure, whether political, fiscal or physical.
the point being is that salmond wants to pick and choose what to go and what to keep, that shouldn't happen, it should be all out or nothing.
He wants to keep the Queen as Head of State i believe, that is very magnanimous, why not elect a new King of Scotland and have done with it.
After all the battles we have fought and the moaning over the rightful heir to the throne, time they got one of their own, King Alex, does have a rather nice ring to it..
Ferguson will likely be a candidate i suspect.
He's certainly something with a small "c"
if ferguson were on the ballot paper, the polls would stay open an extra 3 hours....
clod, clot, clouseau, i will keep on going if you like......
i meant as King in waiting when Scotland goes solo
I know what you meant - but he's still have to be elected. creating a new inherited head of state would be unthinkable.
but it wouldn't be our problem in the rest of the UK, it would be Scotland's
Here is the other side of the coin according to the SNP's referendum white paper.

/// The Scottish government said Scotland's finances were healthier than those of the UK, providing a strong foundation to put the focus of the referendum campaign on Scotland's future. ///

Hang on a minute are they not also the rest of the UK's finances?

not according to some....
as a direct descendant of the royal Stuarts, Mary queen of Scots and Robert the Bruce, Elizabeth has probably more rites to the Scottish throne than the English
Good. She can go too and take her sponging clan with her.
Having never voted, could someone enlighten me as to the cost of the referendum and who will be picking up the tab, so to speak?
^^^ it wont be the scots, they normally go to the toilet when it's their round.
