It was always a con on the workers and something best done away with. Tales of how good it would be for you to be able to work abroad, no mention of how few will actually use the opportunity, little comment at the time regarding the masses who will work for less than you think reasonable coming in, in return.
No.
What is being proposed effectivley is that full membership is not reached until certain economic factors are met. I believe similar things have been done before.
In other words you are a junior member until you come up to speed.
It is probably a last ditch attempt at keeping the UK (- Sctoland) in the EU. I suspect if this fails it may well seal the fate of the UK-EU union given the emotions at the moment.
Totally irrational I know to vote on a single part of a complex subject, but for the most I suspect this will be the case.

Brother Jake, last time I looked Northerners didnt have a separate economy and could claim benefits just like the rest.
Admit it is sometimes like a different planet.
Ironically, given you analogy I suspect (from personal experience) that it is many Northerners driving the anti-immigration stance.
I disagree it is Nationalism, surprised you didnt call it racist, but I'm sure one of your right-on mates with come up with that one later today.

>>>As absurd as limiting the number of Northerners allowed to come and find jobs down south
Not quite.
A person from the "north" is already in the UK and is therefore already paying UK taxes, entitled to UK benefits, entitled to use the UK NHS, schools etc.
A person coming from Romania (or other EU country) has never paid any UK taxes and if they don't bother to work (or get a legal job) they will not pay UK taxes, but will use our NHS, schools and other services, and be entitled to UK benefits.
And because many of these EU countries have a standard of living (and benefits system) FAR below ours, they are more likely to gravitate to the richer (more generous) countries.
My children live in my house and I am willing to subsidise them and look after them, but I would not leave my front door open and invite anyone to come and live in my house and subsidise them and look after them.
Which is why we should limit or control people coming in from other EU countries.

Are you telling me you associate the EU with left wing politics? despite the preponderance of centre right leaders at the moment?
It's nationalism - plain as day
We are 'us' British and must protect ourselves from 'them' foreigners

//Nationalism is a belief, creed or political ideology that involves an individual identifying with, or becoming attached to, one's nation. Nationalism involves national identity, by contrast with the related construct of patriotism, which involves the social conditioning and personal behaviors that support a state's decisions and actions.//
What in the above do you disagree with?

which begs the question
who runs this country us or the eussr !
TM should just tell these dictaors in brussels that WE and WE alone will decide who we will allow in and who we wont.
Brussells needs and wants us desperately we dont need them or their bandit organisation telling us how to run our affairs.

It makes perfect sense to impose a limit on how many immigrants one allows into one's country, and I am sure other countries such as Germany and France are now showing concerns also, but I am afraid this should have done years ago.
We are just full to bursting point, according to today's news most will not be able to draw their state pensions until they are in their 70s, and don't be fooled by the excuse that we are now living longer, no it's because there are many more feeding from the same small trough.

No, I dont associate the EU with left wing politics, just you. It has long been a thorn in all sides.
You still bleat on about Nationalism, but totally ignore the fact that we cannot afford it neither can we build an infrastructure to cope with mass migration.
Is worrying about how we will deal with the above really Nationalism? Probably in your warped pro EU view I expect.

The free movement of people (note “people” - those moving do not necessarily have to provide any labour) was the second most significant achievement of the “European Project” (after the euro). It was also the second most harmful blunder imposed upon 500m people by the European lunatics (after the euro).
The notion that it is a good idea to allow people from what were essentially peasant farmer economies free access to advanced economies where their salaries (and benefits for those not inclined to offer their labour) are up to ten times what they could get at home is utter madness. It does the recipient nations no good at all. It simply means they have to keep home-grown fecklessness in the manner to which it has become accustomed and instead leave them free to import labour. They thus have no need to compel people into work, simply filling the jobs that those already resident “”will not do” with incomers. It does the losing nations no good either. Instead of young people remaining in their countries of origin to help them develop, they up sticks to get the richer pickings available elsewhere, leaving their homelands to decline and depend ever more on handouts from the richer nations.
“As absurd as limiting the number of Northerners allowed to come and find jobs down south “
I think that’s already been adequately addressed by VHG.

Perhaps you could help us, jake, by telling us quite what is so wrong with that. Those of us, that is, who believe in nations and national identity.
And of course I have not even mentioned the pressures imposed on services such as education and health by huge movements of people (whether or not they pay tax) which are difficult to predict and hence equally difficult to cater for.

NJ, wholeheartedly concur, the madness of the European superstate project, a failed attempt at cobbling all these people together, imposing laws, regulations, rules that could or should have come out of a cracker at Christmas time and been discarded as latter day madness. Time to ditch this nonsense and start getting our house in order. we don't need more migrants, simple.
as one Romanian chap said why should he work for max 300 euros a month when if he moves here he could likely get ten times that, probably depriving yet another of our citizens a job, think about that before espousing this nonsense. Of course everyone can apply for a job if qualified, but it does seem that this experiment has got way out of hand.
how can you have an empire like the one the eussr wants without freedom of movement.
at some point they will start abolishing national sovereigntys and borders and national identities etc etc...its all part of their masterplan
its very simple they want one state one people one leader and they will stop at nothing to get it, they want that empire desperately
