So now, we're getting to the 'fag end' of the year...so what do you think has defined 2013 as the 'news story of the year'?

For me, 2012 was defined by the Olympics -how well London coped, how well Team UK did and how awesome the opening and closing ceremonies were (Pet Shop Boys in pointy hats singing 'West End Girls' - yes please).

What news story (non-personal) has left the greatest impression on you from 2014?

Unfortunately for me - the year will be defined by Woolwich...the worst piece of news I've heard since 7/7...

But what's yours? What defined your year for you?

Syria?
The birth of Prince George?
Yewtree?
The horsemeat scandal?
Nigella?
Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI?
The Savar building collapse?
Prince Harry's Crown Jewels in Las Vegas?
Edward Snowden?
Tom Daley?

Ah...yes ummmm....Judy checked the BBC website.

Whilst some may see it as sad news, I think I'll view it more positively - a man who achieved more than I could ever hope to, who is now at peace.

I totally posted this thread four hours too early...

For 'Judy' read 'just'.

Bloody iPad 'auto-correct'.
For me it will be today and the same as B00, Lee Rigby and Ian Watkins. Two of the most horrific stories I've ever encountered.
anything you want to tell us about you and Judy, sp1814?

mikey... yes, I don't think plebgate is a big story in itself, but it may well prove to be a tipping point as you suggest.
I'll go with Prince George . Everything else is a bit depressing? Nigella doesn't count. It's always been known about her habits. I was only shocked it was described as "News".
The deaths of our soldiers in Afghanistan, and the two-faced double dealing of the people who harbour the Taliban there.
Yewtree and Jimmy Savile are far-reaching and could run for years.
Woolwich was horrific, I wish they could hang those killers.
I was going to go with the Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi but the news this evening will doubtless overshadow all others for 2013, IMHO.
Pixie - I've never heard or read about her habits.

Not that I care but if she is a coke head I'm impressed that she manages to do a cooking show.
Jeez, you're all so 'glass half empty'.
that's true zac
In that case Zacs, I'll change to Chris Froome winning the toughest Tour de France in its 100 year history, along with winning the Mont Ventoux stage, the first Briton to do so.
my friend has survived lung cancer :)
Good man chill^^^
Perhaps it was just gossip. I've only seen just a few minutes of one of her shows and can only describe it as manic.
It's the first I've heard about Nigella, she looks pretty good and her cookery progs are good imo. The death of her first husband was pretty harrowing and she seemed to take up with Saachi so soon afterwards, but then I imagine the rich and famous lead different lives to us.
I'd never had Nigella down as a coke head, but looking back at her Xmas shows
when she puts a turkey outside in a dustbin full of water and oranges on Xmas eve I'm not so sure now.

No wonder she always had the munchies at midnight

I didn't know Nigella was a cokehead either. Any more inside goss, pixie? You're a lot further inside the loop than I'll ever be.

(Off topic, and not really a major story at all, but has she had her lips botoxed?)

anne... yes, that is definitely your story of 2013; I wish we could all have a story like that.
