No idea. All seems highly speculative to me. Would be interested in seeing the data, but all of that article consists essentially of some people hypothesising according to their own particular pet theory - a common feature amongst media reporting of science papers! ;)

'Conservatives' in the UK are actually very liberal by USA standards - the party has more in common with the Democrats than it does with Republicans.

So given that in Americanese, the bulk of posters on this site would be hogwash liberals (and YMB would probably be considered a loony lefty over there), the theory doesn't seem very sound :P

I've heard it said ,by an American commentator, that you could fit the whole of the Conservative Party, from right wing to left, into the Democrat Party. It is not easy to reconcile an American finding of 'conservative' into our politics. As it happens, my daughter is more Conservative, more to the right of the Party, than I am. I blame the parents! (Both of us are more to the left of it)
