Has the reporter misinterpreted Greece's MotE statement 'failure to get rid of all illegal dumps was down to three reasons - problems in the local administration, the "island character" ?

Or does the reporter really think Greece is an island?

I think Greece's MotE comment meant that the various councils operate independently, resulting in an 'Island' mentality which I think, in turn, has been misinterpreted, resulting in the confused headline.

I went to the Sinai peninula in Egypt which turn put to e a disgusting waste strewn tip. Non biodegradable carrier bags and bottles drifting by like synthetic tumbleweed. I was shocked. Flies and stench. Not recommended.

Since half of it is islands, it is not an exaggeration to say that it has an 'island character', especially as it has little to do with it's ummediate neighbours.

One a similar theme as Tora, the state of Rhode Island in the US is mostly on the mainland and not surrounded by water.

Read the link, it says ' around half the sites' are on outlying islands! That is why 'island character' is a problem.

Since the construction of the West India Docks in the early 1800s and until the redevelopment of Canary Wharf area, the Isle of Dogs was a true island as access to it could only be gained by crossing a stretch of water. The east, west and south of the island is bounded by a meander in the Thames and the new docks stretched across the north end of the island, with locked entrances to the east and west, thus completing the island.

During the Canary Wharf development much of the three “India” docks were filled in. One of the remaining docks (renamed “South Dock”) almost retains the cut off but about 50 yards of its western inlet have been infilled to allow access to the area via Westferry Road. So the “island” is no more.
