I was interested to read that, according to that article, "In the Netherlands, the vast majority of prisoners are gainfully employed". Could the same be said here? Do prisoners in UK jails get some kind of wage or allowance? If so, then perhaps levying a charge against them might have some value - but if not, it will just add a debt to their burden of re-integration within society upon serving their sentence, and all that will do ,it seems to me, is encourage them to carry on with their illegality in order to service the debt.

It will be interesting to see if they pass the motion in the Netherlands, but I would not support its introduction here in the UK.

hilarious if you have no money whatsoever, are a vagrant, do you then spend your remaining days in jail, i would only charge those who get hammered, they should get stuck in a drunk tank for the night and pay next day, a fee for services rendered, if you can afford to get rat arsed then generally one could afford a fine, perhaps then we might not see so many on the streets, the alcoholic may be a different scenario before anyone mentions it.
