It seems to me that the only losers here are the two children, simply because this woman wasn't just happy with her lesbian relationship, she also wanted children as well.

Not at all - i have read all the James Bond novels - it doesn't mean I have a licence to kill does it? Reading something aimed at a specific audience does not automatically make the reader a memebr of that audience - unless they are unable to form their own opinion - i think i can rely on your judgement on that score!

He says he is just a sperm donor - and as far as i know, we would not expect sperm donors to assume any kind of financial/legal responsibility for any children that were the outcome of their donated sperm.

In some ways it's a pity that the father has intentions of filling the father role since it would be interesting to see which sexual orientation the male child of a lesbian couple would eventually develop - given a predominant absence of male/father figures.
The fact that he will be present but also happens to be homosexual will also be interesting.
Basically I see slim chances of any of them being grandparents if it's born a boy.

If the girls turn out to be heterosexual, then that might indicate the putative gene is on the Y-chromosome, as neither of them received one from the donor/father.
Why do I care about such things? Because, if sexuality is a matter of choice (they insist it is NOT) then upbringing ought to have nothing to do with it and the child of a gay couple can turn out to be straight.
