We have a must have consummer society who must have at any cost. The lack of respect and helping each other has not quite dissapeared, but we are getting there. Fear of speaking our minds without being harrased by certain action groups. The governments policies of the late 1970`s and 80`s which decimated of local communities, by closing down industries....

“We live in a democracy;”
No we do not, bhg. We live in an elected dictatorship. Based on what they promise we elect MPs every five years. They choose a cabinet of ministers who proceed to do precisely as they like until a few months prior to the next election, when the promises begin again.
“…if we can't be bothered to read manifestos and can't be bothered to vote, do we deserve what comes to us?”
Show me substantial differences in the manifestos of the main parties which would have led to a different outcome to that described by AOG.
Many things have led to these changes but high among them must be the “non-judgemental” attitude today. Many people need to have their actions judged and commented upon (and preferably curtailed) when they behave in ways contrary to the public good. Showering money and gifts on the feckless (so, by implication, supporting their habits) does them no good and, more importantly, does nobody else (particularly those who are paying for it) no good either.

i agree with steve and i think those that do not see the way this country has gone down hill have had their eyes closed.
when i was working in the seventies on 12 1/2 shifts i had the money to go out and buy drinks and go for a curry even in them days there was a few who had no job for a period of time and would buy 1 drink and a few tabs this would put them on a different planet for the night
notice the difference working and drinking out of work 1 drink and a few tabs
same thing happens today only on a much larger scale

The fact that some people have never had a job and never will, surely contributes to the laissez-faire attitude in many, who see it as their rights to live off public benefits. The lowering of standards in behaviour, IMO, is partly because people (police, teachers) can no longer remonstrate with hooligans without a parent descending on them saying their "rights". People who've never worked so don't have employment T&C learn no self-discipline (many many only semi-literate due to messing about at school) and feel anything is theirs for the taking. The celeb culture recently has a lot to do with it, too, see your favourite footballer or showbiz star behaving like a pudding and you think it's OK to do that too. I don't know what we do to redeem the standards that were common when we were born.

@NJ So, redefining dictionary definitions of a democracy now, are we?
We do live in a democracy, and we have a choice of political parties to choose from - just because, in those particular areas that grind your particular gears you decide that their is little difference between the parties says more about you than it does about the political parties themselves - although I will agree with you that party ideologies have narrowed and coalesced around a centrist platform in recent decades.
As to this nonsense about not being able to speak your mind - we have never been freer to speak our minds, but the right to speak your mind comes with some obligations too. Only a child thinks they should be able to do anything, say anything, without fear of consequence.
