Interesting :
Swiss voters are to decide whether to reintroduce quotas for migrants from European Union countries in a referendum that could plunge the country’s relations with its neighbours into crisis.
Opinion polls before Sunday’s vote to limit arrivals show 43 per cent support for the Stop Mass Immigration campaign of the right-wing populist Swiss People’s Party, 50 per cent against and 7 per cent undecided.
Although not part of the EU, Switzerland has four member states on its borders and agreed in 2002 to allow the free movement of workers. The arrival of 80,000 people a year has led to the foreign population of Switzerland growing from a fifth to a quarter, while 430,000 Swiss live in EU countries. Its has a population of nearly 8 million. [The Times]
What is interesting is that 50 per cent polled are against. What do you think such a poll here would show?
A referendum is the nearest thing to anything democratic we have. If such a vote goes against ones own views then that has to be accepted, that one failed to win the argument on that occasion. One would hope a vote for quotas here came near to 100%. Surely the argument should be over at what level/rate should we want to get steadily more and more crowded with subsequent increase of problems.
Zero immigration would be very bad for the economy and services but I expect if there was a vote on it, people would put their prejudices first and vote for it.
25 years ago I used to live in a small village/town just outside zurich....now its a a schithole full of muslims and the place is like a foreign country, if you visited now youd never even know you were in what was once a really beautiful place.
