"I hate being unemployed, all I want is to work and get money to live a comfortable life. I was in a job for 10 years before I was made In employment for 10 years. This man was not a shirker. I think it says more about the person who stopped his benefit than it does about Mr Paul Hyde

It's an assumption rather than knowledge, to be sure. All we have to go on at the moment is Mr. Hyde's version of events, and he's placed some emphasis on the placard and the "not handing in CVs" as more of a side-note. It could have been the other way round; certainly one would have thought that, as long as he was also doing other things to look for a job, walking around with a sign shouldn't be a major issue.
Chewn, see DrFilth's post at 13:24 Tue 11th Feb 2014. He explains the process there.

With his skills he could set himself up in business. As Jayne says, she would employ him and so would I.
You need money to start a business...
It seems terribly unfair.

Some of the other job seekers will have posted off their five random CVs on Monday morning, for jobs they know they won't get, and then settled down to watch the telly.

And there's Ross Kemp, actor, TV presenter, painter and decorator, out on the streets, offering himself for work. And he gets penalised.

If he'd stuck to picking up his Benefits and watching Jeremy Kyle, he'd have been okay.
Ummmm, in a business like that, not necessarily.

It is unfair Jayne - but rules are rules I suppose.
Yes I'd agree with the assessment of "unfair". In the last few years rules for JSA have been tightened up: a requirement to attend the Job Centres more regularly, and to do far more per week. Than previously. It's likely that this will end up in some cases doing little about those who know how to "play the system" (meet the minimum requirements), and instead hurting some of the genuine jobseekers.

Chewn > He says he did. How can he prove he did if he doesn't receive a reply ? <

sometimes when you go for a job interview they will sign and put the firms stamp in the little boxes in your booklet this then proves that you have tried
Of course you do. With 5 kids and out of work I doubt he has any savings. Before he even starts he's going to need transport and insurance. My BIL is a painter and decorator, his van is full of materials and they don't come cheap!

jim this system does hurt the genuine job seekers
Ummmm, he might have transport, and as a painter and decorator I would assume he has the tools of his trade. If I were his customer I'd be happy to buy the materials and then pay him to do the job. He's waiting for someone to give him a job, but in his position I'd have a go at going it alone. You don't know what you can do until you try - and I know plenty who've done it.
Someone may've already said this but.... it doesn't say on his sign what he does for a living. If anyone wanted any painting and decorating done, how would they know that that's what he's offering? He doesn't look to me like he's doing his best there.
I did say he should put cards in shop windows, but that's ^^ a good point. It would surely help to know what he does.
You could also assume that the firm he worked for supplied his materials.

You make it all sound so easy, Naomi...
