Isn't it time they all pit bulls, mastiffs etc were destroyed to stop more families suffering?

What purpose do they serve? A vicious dog can hardly be described as a family pet?

Why would anyone allow one of these killing machines anywhere near children?

Viv please let us not convict on looks alone.

I would get 20 y., me....
and my dog - looks so bad that a policeman would just take one look and shoot.

Lol point taken Peter, but I stand by what I say, he looks the type really he does.
I read that there had been complaints about this dog previously, so if it's on the dangerous dogs list why wasn't it taken away then?
My friends son was viciously mauled by a Labrador, My mother had her leg ripped by a jack Russell.
I had to rehome my 8 year old jack russell as he bit Mini Boo as a tot.

As Andy said, it's not the breed as any dog can attack, the problem with this type of dog is that a bite is much more ferocious and packed with far more power than with your average pooch.

I'm sure I read the dog was called "Killer" too, which says it all really doesn't it?
Do not agree that any dog can attack. Have been around dogs since a tiny baby as have my parents before me and none of us have ever been attacked. I know loads of people with dogs, never been attacked. As a baby I daresay I pulled our dog's tail and so on. Loving and loved family pets all of them. There isn't a bad bone in my lovely, gentle old dog's body and I trust him around my baby son, who adores him.
Dog has now been put down....pity can't say same for owners !
Personally I wouldn't leave any dog with a small child. Our old spaniel was wonderful with the kids, a big soft lump, but I still wouldn't leave her alone with them. If something had happened (and I honestly think there was a greater chance of pigs taking to the skies), I would never have forgiven myself.

I doubt the mother would have thought for a second that this could have happened to her daughter, I'm sure she will punish herself until the day she dies. Saying that, I do hope the courts deal with her and the boyfriend in an appropriate manner.

My heart goes out to this poor child's family, including the mother.
Its not just the above dogs that are harmful to babies and children..remember the jack russell attacking the one month old baby boy and killing him. That was their own dog also and not on the dangerous dogs act. I say just do not mix dogs with children full stop. Its happened too many times. I hate it when people say my dog is 'child friendly' I can guarantee you no dog is child friendly they get jealous of kids and attack. I am very saddened that this has happened yet again and people dont learn!
agree with silliemillie - never ever leave a dog and a baby alone. Even Judge Judy says so.

Your personal experience does not contradict my observation. The majority of dogs never attack anything or anyone, but that does not mean that they are not capable of doing so. It is naiive to assume that because you have been fortunate in your experience of dogs, that an entire species is immune from turning when the circumstances - known only to the animal in question - arise.

I could find you someone who has raised a full-grown lion as part of the family and never had so much as a scratch - it doesn't infer that lions make great pets.

"There isn't a bad bone in my lovely, gentle old dog's body ..."

Yes there is - let's hope he never feels his place in the pack is threatened by your child because, however loving and sweet he is, he is a pack animal, and instinct will out.

///Next time you read in the paper about a vicious rape is your first thought going toe that all men should get castrated?///

That is a brilliant idea.
Trophy breed for Chavs! Enough said.
Well put, Andy.

I was pretty sure that our dog was safe around children, but their lives are too precious to gamble with.

No child has ever died because a dog wasn't allowed in the room alone with them.
Blame the owner, not the dog. And I agree with "Trophy breed for Chavs".
My dog is 13 years old, the same age as my eldest grandchild. I have eight other grandchildren and, through the years as toddlers, all have nipped my dog, teased it, trodden on it's paws, woken it up when it was resting, etc, etc, etc. And my dog has taken all this in her stride - and is always overjoyed to see any of them - because that's the type of dog she is. However, during those 13 years, i have always impressed upon my children that none of the toddlers should ever be left alone with her, even though, in my heart of hearts, i am totally convinced she would never harm them. There is always the chance - however slim - that i may be wrong.
"all have nipped my dog, teased it, trodden on it's paws, woken it up when it was resting, etc, etc, etc."

I'm sorry, but I find that quite distressing to read. My children have been brought up to respect the dog, it's not their play thing. Despite that, we did have an incident which both the dog and child paid for, but nonetheless I would never let them annoy the dog with my knowledge of it happening.
Boo; i didn't say we sat back and watched the grandkids mistreat the dog. Clumsiness on the part of both animal and human resulted in paws being trodden on; as toddlers they have laid by it's side, often going to sleep with it but sometimes getting up to mischief such as nipping, or not allowing her to sleep. And, on occasions, they have teased her with sweets. They were kids being kids, boo. Nothing sinister - sheesh!!!
How many people have been attacked by these type of dogs?
How may people / Children have been bitten by these dog's?
How many more people are going to be Mauled / killed by these dogs?
How many more will be attacked by these doges?
How many times have we to shout / say / read in the papers,
It does not matter who owns them, when OUT MUZZLE the bloody animals,
When inside, keep away from children, it's as simple as that.
Muzzling that particular dog wouldn't have helped in this tragic situation would it TWR?
