Just unimaginable thinking about the loss of life in this tragedy.

There are thoughts, obviously just that at this stage, that terrorism may be a possible cause, especially now they have identified four stolen passports having been used by passengers on the flight.

I will be honest in that I don't have much knowledge of politics in that part of the world. I know that there have been terrorist incidents but who could be behind this kind of a tragedy, if it does turn out to be an act of terrorism?

You're more in the know than most of us 237, what's your gut feeling, some catastrophic mechanical failure of terrorism/hijack?
I`m not an expert but I don`t think it was a catastrophic failing of the aircraft TBH. I have been working on/with the B777 for 16 years and they are a very safe aircraft. I think the fact that some sources are indicating that the aircraft could have turned back could be significant but it is just too early so say without the facts.
maybe it hit the sea at the right angle and its gone down with no wreckage at all that will ever be discovered? its really sad isnt it. Nightmare for families.
If it was terrorists, unless they claim responsibility for the act and make the authorities `take more notice of their demands`what would they gain. .
If you remember the awful night of Lockerbie
the aircraft broke up and the pieces were clearly visible on radar

It took I recall, about 30 m to fall the 6 mi into the sea
Alien abduction?

The fact that it turned back.....?

No fingerprint is most bizarre, even an exploding plane leaves some residual radar marks.
That came up earlier in the thread barney. Not all terrorist acts are claimed and often not until some time later.
Lockerbie didn't fall into the sea PP, it fell on Lockerbie.
But my point is if as you say some acts are never claimed, what could the terrorist group possibly gain from carrying it out.
barney - there will always be people who want to blow up aircraft
Revenge was suggested, maybe just to instil terror or disruption. Talking Lockerbie nobody officially claimed responsibility for that but it happened.
But if was blown up there would be visible wreckage ..... no?
Lockerbie and environs like Ecclefechan - a nearby family friend's farm got rained on.....
Well I guess we are only being told the bits `they`want us to know as usual, so it could well be that there are good reasons for not saying to much, and if it means catching those responsible then that's fine with me..
You'd think naomi, maybe they're not looking in the right place? I just hope the truth is found for the sake of the families.
If the aircraft was "blown up" at altitude, then the debris woud rain down and be spread around a large area, so yes, it would be visable.
Friends of mine who own a farm in Northumberland, found letters etc on their land after the Lockerbie disaster, DTC.
The TV news at 10 seems to indicate the stolen passports were part of an illegal immigration scam not a terrorist plot. Both the 2 passengers with stolen passports had asked for ' the cheapest flights to Europe' and were booked on onward flights from China to Europe.
barney, Searches are being carried out by numerous countries. I can't see that some sort of conspiracy of silence is in operation.

Wouldnt it be great if we ever heard that the plane has landed at an unknown aiport that they have kept secret, and nobody has ever know about.
Impossible, but wishfull thinking .
