well, it is a racist term, as well as a non-racist term. But I don't see the BBC losing this one.
But there was a slope on the bridge. From left to right about half way across. It didn't take a Jeremy to see that.
even if the BBC lose, the amount of publicity generated for TG will make it worthwhile
Did he use it deliberately as a racist term or not ? I suppose it all depends on that really.
That was all I thought Graham, until it was mentioned on here the week following.
Since, as advised, there was a slope on the bridge, it has to come down to a matter of interperetation - and that is seriously hard to prove because it's one word against another.
If the show survives -- though it's hard to see the BBC pulling it, Top Gear is too popular.

I don't see this going very far, beyond an apology anyway. On the other hand, either the BBC didn't research offensive language properly, or it was deliberately meant to be a clever play on words with the use of the racist "slope". Not really worth £1 million, but still pretty short-sighted of the BBC to allow this to slip through.
This is all about proving intent, easy if the bridge had not been slanted (can I say that?) but as it very clearly was not sure how they will prove it otherwise.
I have never heard the term and I lived out there long enough. Good term for those next door neighbours of ours across the Tamar.

Don't think it will stick as there was a hell of an 'angle' to that bridge that they built.
I'm not sure the ambiguity defence will work very well, though we'll see. This is the sort of low-brow humour that we've come to expect from Top Gear so it's hard to see them not missing the opportunity to make this sort of joke...
if BBC had to pay a million pounds who would get that money? Maybe this is a no win no fee thing and the lawyers would get most of it!

I wonder who is funding Ms Somi Guha's legal battle with the BBC? I am sure she isn't dipping her hand in her own pocket.
I could make millions! I've been called a f****** "Pom", "Rosdif", "Limey" and "Sassenach". None of which seems to be complimentary.
Somebody else who fails to see the funny side of a show that's designed to be funny........probably more publicity in this one article for the actress than she's ever had as an actress.... The Daily Mail society..... Britain would be a more fun place without it!!
An actress. This is obviously about fighting racism of course, but I don't suppose the publicity will harm her career.
"but I don't suppose the publicity will harm her career."
Unless she leans to one side. Oooops. Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I had no idea that the word slope could be used in a derogatory manner until now.

I saw the programme and thought absolutely nothing of the comment. JC made a fair point, there was a slope on the bridge. Ms Guha can feel free to sue me too if she likes.
Nor me 2sp
