Duh - AOG - the Muslim population of the UK has nearly doubled in a decade, so wouldn't one expect the prison population to go up....one would hope at lower than the increase. Info UK census 2001/11 1.6 million to 2.8

Unfortunately, you have missed the real point here, that would merit more debate. The Muslims now make up 4.8% of the population and in prison it is one in 7 or 14.2% if I apply old-fashioned maths.

There are many reasons why they find themselves very easily on the wrong side of the law.

Many Muslims have come from countries where there is a lot of violence and not much enforcement.

They sometimes have little opportunity to earn money and resort to illegal activities to make a living.

Some Muslims believe only in the laws of their religion and have contempt for the laws of their hosts.

Islam teaches contempt for the rights of women and this sometimes leads to sex crimes. They are often surprised when such crimes are reported and investigated in a modern western society, unlike their country of origin where the victims are too frightened to say anything and the police don't care.

2001 there were 1,591,000 muslims in the country.
2011 there were 2,700,000 muslims in the country.

The number of muslims here has nearly doubled, so if the number sent to prison has double, that is what you woyld expect. It means the percentage of muslims being sent to prison for crimes has remained about the same.

The figures are higher than that in some areas. 27% in London.

Some areas of London have a muslim population of over 30%. So if some Prisons have over 30% muslim prisoners, that is not surprising.

All this all proves is that muslims are no more or no less law abiding than the rest of the population.

How do the police know that they are Muslims until they are actually caught and charged?

If it is not surprising, then why is such a prominent person (himself a Muslim) calling for an inquiry?
