Apparently only about 33% of us eat 5 pieces of fruit and veg a day, and now some researchers have suggested that we should up this to 7 a day. I work on the Welsh Health Survey and its apparent that the majority of adults in Wales barely make the 5 a day. Its always puzzled me why this figure is so low, but I suspect that many people are not counting their daily intake properly. When I point out that potatoes are vegetables, they respond by saying that they always eat plenty of them.

How many here on AB eat the required amount ?

don't buy any fruit as i know it will go in the bin after sitting there for a week
We'll have to agree to disagree then roy.
No Mikey have'nt not since my school days when l remember buying a penny specky apple on the wat there. I just cannot stand the taste of citrus in my mouth. It does'nt seem to have done me much harm as I am now 79 and apart from dodgy knees I am fit and well.
Usual nonsense from those that want to rule our lives.

We all know what to do if we want to live longer, but maybe some of us dont. Live to a hundred on vegetables, no booze and clean living. No thanks I'll take a shorter more agreeable life!

Too late for me anyway now I suspect.

to answer you question Mickey, we always have a selection of fruit in the house, vegetables too. More in the summer from the garden. But i doubt i eat 5 portions every day (Dont actually count just eat a varied diet).

Fruit is far too expensive, veggies not so bad for the common ones but who wants to live on carrots?
If they set the target at a reasonable 3 portions, there might be some chance that the people who don't eat any fresh produce at all might take some notice of it.

As it is, everyone just ignores it and carries on with their own particular eating habits, which may or may not be healthy.

Today I have eaten

banana
mango
blueberries

but that's probably my lot, since I have chilli con carne for tea and veg don't go with that.

I always understood that potatoes don't count in the 5 a day, because they are carb-laden.

I thought this announcement was an April Fool at first, since the researchers only asked a set of people what fruit and veg they had eaten on the previous day, and from that claim to be able to tell how much longer it'll extend their lives - how would they do that, then?!
Am eating my Omega 3 divebuddy, but I dont know what biffidems are. I had a digestive with a cup of tea at a friends house yesterday.
i probably eat more - mon to fri, less on a weekend, they are dedicated to sausage and wine

for example so far today
melon
banana
carrots
big salad inc an avocado
and will be having broc, peas, cauli & baby corn with my dinner

sounds good db
Hate to disappoint you db, but there is no 'corn' in 'corned beef' - it refers to the corns of salt used to cure the meat.

Boxy - do you not put onions and kidney beans in your chilli? The both count.
Well I'm having ham, egg and chips tonight, not a bit of fruit or veg in sight!

Except maybe in the tomato ketchup.
Not sure where two apples cost £1.20, most supermarkets now sell a bag of five or six for about £1.50 - sometimes less!
My son has just told me that this eating seven pieces of fruit or veg a day is an April Fool gag!
If I were to eat these portions per day I would never leave the small room. My digestive system can't cope with all that fibre on a regular basis .
I'll eat what I like and don't need Nanny to tell me otherwise !

Roopower...you are right. all this talk about "fruit and veg is too expensive
and that is why my kids won't eat it" is just not true. I bought a bag of pears from 99p in Lidl this morning.
