Regardless of the sensationalist headline 'Eat pork or go hungry' (that is not what she said) or Marine Le Pen's politics, should UK schools follow her lead on the problem of special school meals to suit certain religious groups.

In my opinion, this reader has got it about right:

*** As much as you should respect people's religious beliefs you also should respect the beliefs of the country that you live in. European countries that have a high immigration rate are in danger of losing their identity because they have to be so politically correct. I support multiculturalism whole heartedly but when are we going to stand up for our beliefs and what makes a country ours? People are so afraid of being racist that they're scared to stand up for their own beliefs and values. Equality and respect is a good thing but where do we draw the line? ***

tolerance must work both ways, not here it doesn't, it's their way or no way, find me other than the local supermarket a butchers that sells pork, getting harder and harder to find, halal meats have been foisted on us, and no one has complained, no one in government that is, no one in schools, perhaps many just don't care. Surely if they can cater for vegetarians they can cater for faiths who don't eat pork, and leave those who do to get on with it.
Why should the government complain about butchers who sell (only?) halal food? As far as I'm aware, it's not unlawful and you have said the local supermarket sells pork so it's not as if you have nowhere to buy it, what is the problem?
because i don't want to buy from the supermarket, surely that is my choice.
and its a butcher's choice what they sell.....
that may be the case, but if its only halal, then i have no choice in the matter, other than to buy from a supermarket.
and if they don't sell pork or pork products because of their religious beliefs that is ok with you.

We are hearing disturbing news about Muslims making attempts to take over some of our schools & now this news item about special meals for Muslim children, I think enough is enough. If anyone wants to settle in this country is it asking too much that they adopt our well established way of life without wanting to change things to suit their own needs ?
WR, sorry its way too late for that.
WR, its not about special meals for muslims, its about a French gob on a stick trying to make a non story into a story.
Emmie if someone wants to open a butchers and only sell certain meats for whatever reason, its fine with me. People are free to open shops to sell whatever they want that is legal to sell. If you want to buy pork and your local butchers don't sell it, then why don't you open a butcher's shop? I am assuming that if there was a huge demand for a butchers shop that sold pork in your area, then someone would see the opening and take advantage of it!
Schools and prisons have ALWAYS had to offer a choice of 2 meals one of which is suitable for Muslims / Jews and vegetarians. I have worked in a Prison and I know two school cooks. So this is yet another non story.
I'm starting to like my local council a bit more than I did.

our butchers closed a number of years ago. I am referring to the fact that look around most parts of the capital and you would see only halal - so in another words i shop in a supermarket for meats that i didn't before,
and we have no local anything any more, all gone, like the proverbial do do
I don't think you can blame loss of local shops on Muslims.....
woof
as to opening a butchers shop, a very strange suggestion wouldn't you say,
seeing as how its a trade you have to learn, from what i remember of our old butchers he was a good tradesman, his business was passed down from his father, and his father before that.
no i blame the useless councils for not supporting businesses that are more diverse, if you cater only for one peoples in the community, how on earth do the others go on.
