Irish President Meets The Queen.

I was wondering why the Irish President was inspecting the Grenadier Guards rather than the Irish guards until I read this, which then got me wondering what peacekeeping duties need to take place in Cyprus, especially when Turkey wants to join the EU?.

It's a long term UN commitment. We are there as part of that.

Despite improved relations and movement between the two communities there is still a 'peaceline' and no-man's land that requires maintaining.

/especially when Turkey wants to join the EU?/

Both sides are very possessive of their tourists & Theres no throughfare. Armed guards monitor borders, hence Brit forces to keep peace
