There is a theory why babies cry at night. Are they really that clever?

Breastfeeding is 98% effective as contraception- as long as that's all you do. Any bottles/ weaning and it doesn't work. Although i wouldn't recommend anyone to rely on it!
Your right, OG, wish I'd thought of that 21 years ago.
That's why there are two, tony!
Yeeuurch...
Yes pixie, but I have three kids !.
Unless they're triplets- no excuse! Lol.
Your right, pixie, however I've never been that keen on milk.
Again. Yeeeuuurch...
Thats what I thought to, pixie.
Apropo of nothing in particular - I know three interesting facts about babies.

Here goes...

1. We've all seen babies grab their feet and play with their toes...the reason why is that they don't have the developed synaptic links to understand that their feet and legs are connected to their bodies. To babies, feet are something to play with...they think that they are toys!

2. All babies are born with just one fear - the fear of heights. A BBC documentary proved this a few years ago with an experiment where a number of babies were placed on a platform with another platform five feet away. Across the platform was a glass sheet. All the babies would crawl to the platform and stop because they could sense the drop between the two platforms. Babies have no other fear.

3. All babies, whatever their race, have that awesome 'baby smell'. It's difficult to define what it is, but with my brother, it was a mixture of talcum powder and Farley's Rusks.

Oh...just remembered a fourth one...the reason why babies always put things in their mouths is because between and the age of about 18 months, babies can only make sense of the world by their mouths! You give them a toy or whatever, and to understand it's shape, they have to use their mouths, because it's the first sense that develops properly (touch).

This is all I know about babies.

Apart from one other...

Their poo is...astonishing...
sp1814 if you can get them talking before their brains have started to become overloaded with daily life, they can sometimes tell you their memories of being born

SP - babies put everything in their mouth way before 18 months. They do it as soon as they can hold something. 4 months plus...
And often get it wrong and hit themselves in the face instead...then cry.
I've always found it odd that the grown ups in the house sleep in the same bed but we expect the littlest people in the house to sleep in a bed/cot on their own, bit mean really.
I was always fascinated by the 'stepping reflex' they are born with but wears off quite soon.
Aren't new borns supposed to be able to grab someone fingers and hang from them? Can't say it's something I have ever tried.
Yes, it's the Palmar Grasp reflex and you are right not to test it out, amazingly strong though.
re breast feeding as a contraceptive, it is only 98% effective as long as menstruation has not resumed.
I've always found a feeding baby to be 100% effective :)
Never worth using it as such unless an increase in your family is no problem, IMO of course.
