Given that many non-Mulsim dislike the concept of Halal and do not trust the stunning claims, one would have thought it was a retrograde move on their part. But I guess some groups are more strident in getting their way whilst other groups simply complain, as if they were British or something.

takeover?
changing just under 200 outlets to "halal" represents less than one tenth of the total subway branches in the UK and Ireland. at least they're being up front about it.
far worse in my book are those islamic-owned pizza parlours (and there are plenty in the midlands) who sell turkey slices as "ham" in flagrant breach of consumer legislation.

I'm not sure I understand a word of that.
ham and bacon has been substituted for turkey ham and rashers
Is that the wrong way round? Turkey instead of ham, not ham instead of turkey?
It says halal abbatoirs kill the animals while they're fully conscious and they shouldn't be stunned. Subway says they *are* stunned. And yet it's halal.

// Where will this 'takeover' end //
I agree, our High Streets have far too many American eateries.
// The sandwich chain said 'following a strong demand from our Muslim customers', 185 outlets in the UK and Ireland have introduced the meat, which is prepared under strict Islamic rules. //
Subway are responding to their customers preferences. They could ignore their customers, but will lose money. As the purpose of these restaurants is to make as much money as possible, then they will supply food that their customers want.
If there is a backlash and people start the boycott the horrible places, then they will start to lose money and they will change there minds.
Market forces at work. There are a couple of Subway branches near me and they do seem to attract a lot of Asian customers, possibly they have using halal products for a long while
