I'm guessing your question is not about the aptness of the name of a boy 'band'.

The rich use tax avoidance as a means of paying less tax. Our present Prime Minister benfitted from such as scheme when his father squirelled the family wealth to offshore havens.

'Take That' appear to have been given bad advice. And now have to cough up more money than they had hoped.

It's a bit of a boring story unless you are a fan (or an hater) of the band.

Tax receipt have fallen under this Government. Recession and 3 years of stagnation means Osborne's coffers have been greatly reduced. Things have got so bad, he has to make his mates pay their fair share.

I was wondering about that, pixie. The usual rule is that avoidance is sensible but evasion is illegal. They're probably trying to hint that avoidance should be illegal too.

found it difficult to see the difference.

In "Chambers" dictionary Avoidance is defined as Evasion.

What puzzles me is how one is acceptable and the other is illegal.

SirOracle, the law makes the distinction though the dictionary may not. Or it used to, which is why the judge's use of the word surprised me.

Basically- evasion is illegal and avoidance is legal. You avoid paying tax if you're a child. Fair enough. Evasion is being paid in cash, for example and not putting it through the books.

To me both words mean the same thing.
A child Evades paying tax is the same as a child Avoids paying tax.
Surely there should be another word for legally Avoiding /Evading tax.

Any suggestions ??
