Should London Host The 2016 Olympic Games?

An article in the DT on Saturday....a quiet feeler has been put out to London if we can host the 2016 Games.

Apparently, at the same time, allowing for the 4 year span, we were 60% complete, the Brazilians are only 10% there.....World

Then look at the World Cup and is that a recipe for disaster? Perhaps Brazil went 8 years to soon and that their rapidly increasing $ wealth from oil should have first been put to improving the mass of the population in housing, education and health before even considering the World Cup or the Olympics?

Should we do this?

Who pays? Us, the Brazilians, the IOC?

Is there some way we could co-share with the Brazilians? Their games but hosted here, things like the opening and closing ceremonies essentially Brazilian but the show put together by use?

The admin, the greeters, could it ever be the success of 2012?

they were saying this eight years ago: the Greeks are making a right mess of it, shall we ask Sydney to step in again? The answer was No. The Greeks were ready after all, about five minutes before the games started; they weren't all that great. History may repeat itself in 2016. But the answer was always going to be No.

There were similar fears about the Commonwealth Games in India in 2010, but all turned out well. I'm sure it will be the same in Rio.
If not, I'm not sure we have all the buildings and accommodation still in place from 2012, but I expect others could be found. I really don't think we'll be called upon anyway.

we should do it if we can, we made bomb last time and we are one of the places who could hold it with very short notice with little expense. We'll probably end up doing the world cup in 2022 too, Qatar is a complete FIFA sized balls up.

can't see how that would be possible, TTT. The grounds are already being redeveloped for housing - I think some of it may be available already - and stadia have been taken away.

We could lend them G4S to do the security, though.

West Ham? Wouldn't it be on the downtime of the Season....jno perhaps has it as the grounds capacity and apartments etc are all being stripped back/being put to other use. If so, they had better decide bloody quick.

Would the Queen be prepared to drop out of a plane a second time?

I agree; it would be virtually impossible to recreate the individuality of those generally brilliant Games of 2012. If we did do something, it should be totally in the name of the IOC or perhaps with a displaced Brazilian (facesaving) operation and neutral to the UK budget.....

The Olympics are in the summer anyway, track down for 3 weeks no problem. All other facilities exist somewhere. It wouldn't be a 2012 but it we'd get it done, just like in 1948 when no one else could put it together.

Yup, all you need to run an overblown and bank busting extravaganza is a few punters who can kick a football, some dodgy looking women with huge butts and a big old statue of a carpenter's laddie looming over you.
Get your population out of the squalor they live in before you spend the inheritance on this rubbish.

Whilst it's true that some of the 2012 sites are currently being redeveloped, I'm sure we could all chip in to help.

I myself would be willing to host the equestrian events in my back garden. Would just have to chop back a bit of privet hedge and move the barbecue, but I think I could cope.

Me mam has promised to help out with the catering with her world famous jerk chicken (at a price).

no, as good as it was, i wouldn't like to see a repeat, and we most definitely can't afford it. The athletes quarters are now flats, or going to be, and the area surrounding has been redeveloped, the Park is now for the people of the area and beyond - so not a good idea.

No. I think a big part of its success last time was that everyone thought it was going to be sh1te.

This time, everyone would be expecting it to be good and be sorely disappointed.

Now I mean, money aside, would you really want to do that to the memory of the Olympics? Would you really want to risk soiling it?

TTT, that is not the point, much of what is needed, the housing for the athletes are now apartments, the grounds that surround the park, is now a large family style park, the swimming pool is now a leisure centre, we can't build another stadium, arenas, so where would all the other stuff go.
and there is simply no time to get this organised 2016 is just two years, considering how long the 2012 project took from start to finish when we were awarded the games, we simply couldn't afford it, perhaps in twenty years time, but not now.

i didn't think it was going to be s hite, i did think we would have massive traffic problems, there were some, but not as much as i expected.
i visited the Paralympics, it was a magical day out.
