Decided to have a clear out of kitchen cupboards and guess what was lurking in the dark recesses? Packet of noodles - best by date 2006; baking powder - best by date 2010, macaroni - best by date 2011 and garlic puree - best by date 2010. And to think I prided myself on not wasting food!

Congrats on Dundee coming up to the Premier maggiebee. I'm looking forward to my roll'n'mince when we visit, no matter how old they are :-)

you haven't wasted it, you have sensibly stored it in case of apocalypse.
that's not waste, its a historically valuable domestic archive.
I am waiting on my son to come over and we are cleaning the fridge and the kitchen cupboards,i might be able to beat you with they dates.i was using Vaseline for my sore nose and happened to look at the date,2000.i am still using it cos I keep forgetting to get another.
These are all "best by" not "eat by" dates :-)
maggie, naughty step, right now ;-)
Let us know how they taste
Indeed Old_Geezer .

I do think however that a 8 year old packet of noodles , might just be losing the battle to live , flavour wise

Bazile I actually cooked the noodles and the birds are just loving them!
maggie, are the noodles and the macaroni that dried stuff, if they are how can they go of if they are in a sealed bag.
Question Author
Noodles were in a sealed bag, but macaroni had been opened. Shows how often I clean out cupboards lol.
Noodles should have been ok, maggie.
ya dirty midden.
Your kidding.
I did a clean out a while ago and found "best by" dating back to last century.
How bizarre, I did exactly the same thing last night and have filled a food recycling bag with raisins, currants, hot chocolate, 2 packets of ryvita, 3 bottles of slimfast, some yeast, a block of demerara sugar, some rice, a Christmas pudding and some prunes. The oldest was 2006 and nothing had a date after 2010. Very wasteful.

You're no wrong Anne!!
I was told that tinned food had a life of 20 years. So my tin of ham dated Feb 09 has years to go yet.
Nothing from the last millennium then?

That's pretty poor.

You should have seen some of the stuff I found in my parents' cupboard a few years ago!
I have a bottle of Scotch from 1964 ... it's probably still improving ... I'm not sure I dare open it though.

Probably the best investment I ever made - cost me £100 in 1994 - wish I'd bought a case :+(
