Mike, waterproofing and size is a red herring, it's whether or not the beacon is activated *by* water.

There are two different types of emergency beacons used on boats, EPIRBS and PLBs. It may be -and that's one of the unknowns for me - the crew here only had, or had access to, PLBs or personal EPIRBs, which is why they let them off in sequence. This explains a bit more:

Thanks humbersloop. I learnt a lot today, yacht-wise...still have no desire to go on one though.

More than 40 private boats set from Antigua to out to find missing British sailors... http://bit.ly/1lCXVBK
I hope they're found. Are there no signal beacons on life rafts?
follow the link @17.05 sandy
okey dokey.
If the yacht was taking on water then the crew would have had time to deploy and board the liferaft and add some emergency supplies to those on the raft already. The emergency beacon indicates it's approximate location and the crew could survive for weeks in the raft.
Apparently, they were very-well equipped and know the safety and survival drills.....and are extremely fit people too.
I thought they gave up pretty sharpish.

and yeah sqad they may know their job but are they telepaths ?
