She had a living will which meant that she would not be resuscitated and food and water had been withdrawn. This is according to reports on Sky News earlier this morning. I think it's so very sad. Quite apart from her political life, I always thought she seemed so likeable (which set her apart from most politicians) and was warm, funny and self-deprecating whenever I'd heard her talk. Haven't seen the news in tha past hour, but if she has died, I'm very sad to hear that. My heartfelt sympathies to all her friends and family.
Very sorry to hear that Mo Mowlem has died. She always came across as being a very sincere lady. Don't know if anyone saw her recently on Rolf Harris's Sunday morning show where three artists were asked to paint her and she had to chose the one she like most, after eventually choosing she felt so bad about not choosing either of the others that she bought them anyway! Deepest sympathy to all her friends and family.
Mo Mowlam was instrumental in the peace process of which there is no doubt. Now the unionists did not like her very much after a few years as Northern ireland secretary so maybe they will not be so generous as the question in their praise (but then they will also not talk ill of the dead and quite rightly). If i recall correctly it was their insistence that for the northern ireland peace process to flourish in any form (Mo seemed to be favouring the republicans in her speeches) she had to be replaced. Enter Mandelson. So Blair will no doubt lavish praise on her...but in the end he replaced her and got his crony in at a time when he could have shown more faith in her.
Living in her costituency I met Mo a few times and always found her to be a very friendly person ready for a joke and a laugh. She always made a point of bringing a bottle of House of Commons sherry or wine and a box of confectionary (chocolates or toffees) in to our fire station for us every christmas even if that meant coming in on Christmas day itself. She will be sadly missed.
