I can guess the significance of the N word.........but despite reading the newspaper and asking various people......I cannot find the meaning of the G-word.

I know it is politically incorrect......because everyone is saying so.............help!

JJ

\\Does it complicate things that I collectively refer to my gal pals as "guys"?

When I meet up with a group of my girlfriends, I'd generally say "Hey, guys!"\\

Yes it does....very confusing. I have difficulty in getting my "tongue" around it

Im over 50 and always have 'girly' days out with friends. we have a meet up with the 'girls' evening once a month.
It is totally ridiculous to say that it could be offensive in any way at all to call someone a girl!
Hey, Sqad.

Tongue practice makes perfect, as they say.

Well, I do, anyway.

:0p
Agree with jubie ^^
I like that fella from Brighton calling herself JJ. She likes to get her tongue around things... allegedly. ;-)
' I can't believe I've been beaten by a 19 year old girl ' (from article)

A lot of Aber's on here would quite like that methinks lol
Usually have to pay good money for that sort of thing.

Are there any words left in the English language that wont soon be banned by the right-on brigage.

O
It was GURL sqad

I was surprised that the auntie Beeb was being so mimsy

Definitely an age thing - our generation dont distinguish an age for girls and lads but apparently those younger do. You can do a degree in this sort of thing - sociolinguistics.

Saussure (1909) pointed out that in an analytic language (English) - the words had their own meaning, and the context may then modulate them. Think well and think of well in well-to-do.

Here the word complained of ( gurl ) is modulating the context.....

lots of ink has been spilt on this.....

PP...thanks for that explanation.

Didn't understand one word of it....;-)
Yes or No Sqad it is OK for you to refer to the fair sex as 'girls'

because you're .... an old.

[ it took me some time to adjust to 'old' being a noun as well as an adjective ]
Sqad - didnt understand a word...
dont do linguistics then
"It is totally ridiculous to say that it could be offensive in any way at all to call someone a girl!"

I'd rather you didn't call me it.
ha ha sorry oldgeezer I shouldve added if you're a woman!
Jordyboy, have you ever actually listened to Young Girl? You can see where it becomes a problem when men can't be bothered telling the difference between 12 and 120
