New Drivers - A Good Idea?

First reaction is - yes it is.

But on deeper reflection questions such as:

What about those that work at night?
Why penalize those that are careful and mature?
What if a young Girl had a late breakdown and could not get back before curfew, you can bet your bottom dollar some jobsworth would prosecute her.

I was wondering if the best option might be to have compulsory cameras on the car? If caught doing something stupid or getting 3 points then a retest or ban until more education

What do ABers think given that with those stats the status quo is not really an option?

I think it`s a terrible idea to have a night time curfew. Would they rather a young person walked home in the dark from their evening job in a rural bar than drive? I was brought up in a rural area and it was an abolute 'must' that you had to learn to drive as soon as possible. Most of us had our first driving lesson on our 17th birthday but I don`t remember people being particularly foolhardy then so I don`t know what`s changed nowadays. Maybe more emphasis should be placed on safe driving practices when someone is learning to drive.

ha ha AOG I thought exactly the same!

I'm not sure about this as my son is a young driver and him and his friends ring each other when they need a lift in the early hours. whoever is available will go and pick them up. I think this is quite sensible of them and wouldn't want that to stop.

good idea, need to find a way around the potential anomolies but in essence it's a good idea.

i think it would make more sense to make drivers learn for a set amount of time i.e 100 hours and have to take pass plus on completion. Life is 24/7, you get just as many bad drivers during the day

Nonsense idea

Yet another example of not addressing the real problem: dangerous driving, speeding, DUI etc

and instead adopting a blanket approach which penalises everybody by stopping them from doing something that isn't itself a problem ie driving at night

I think there are other categories of drivers who should be the focus of the RAC`s concerns. I know someone who is still driving at 87 and is a complete maniac on the roads. I also know someone who came here to live from Zimbabwe and when she lived there, she purchased a fake driving licence from someone in Nigeria. When she came to live in the UK, she swapped the licence or a UK one. So not only is she driving around on the roads without never having taken a UK test, she has never taken ANY driving test. I guess someone would scream "discrimination" if anybody tried to address that issue though.
