Basically, every serving and former soldier will be muttering "told ya" to the Government at this latest news:

This really is a high risk strategy, especially with Islamic extremism shifting theatre and becoming ever more prevalent in Africa, current events in Mosul notwithstanding either.
Our Armed Forces will be stretched beyond capability by 2020 IMHO. If we get the 2022 World Cup after the Qatar debacle we'll be screwed!

Why do you think we should continue to get involved in every external spat? We are no longer a world force and should behave as such, let others put the money and even more important the personnel up.

As for the Islamic threat it is probably too late for us here in the UK. New Labour let them in, called us all racists for being worried and now Islamic fundamentalism is here. We are also locked by what we can do due to the ECHR and the EU. No soldiers can help us with that.

I don't. It's just that it generally falls on us or the US to provide experts/Special Forces when such matters arise as the recent mass kidnapping.
Lets face it, when the excrement hits the air conditioning apparatus the world turns to us, as opposed to the hapless and toothless UN, such is our standing.
Very soon, we will not have the capability.
Well everyone clamoured for cuts, including the defence budget, and this is what you get. Damned shame.
No, I still maintain the rest of the World should shoulder their fair share. Why should it be Brits sent to die and us to pay for it?

Our forces should be cut further to protect our shores and no further.

Special forces dont need large numbers and corresponding large budgets anyway. Cut the numbers overall and increase special services would be far better against Islamic terrorists.
I certainly didn't ask for cuts in our Armed Forces, they are the very people who we need to keep on their toes, we need modern ships, aeroplanes and up to date weaponry. I want to see my nephew back from Camp Bastion in one piece. The world is a very unstable place our successive Governments have been sleepwalking into trouble by not keeping abreast of this nation's needs. Russia and the Middle East are still volatile. Better safe than sorry.

Hmm, if only it were that simple. As for Special Forces, they've generally been the best in the world because they are the elite from(what certainly used to be) a large selection pool. Decrease the size of the pool and.....well, I'm sure you can work the rest out for yourself.
