// A civil servant in Liverpool has been fired for using government computers to post abuse about the Hillsborough disaster on the Wikipedia website following an investigation by The Telegraph.

The offender, who is from London but lives in Liverpool with his fiancée, was found after changes to the online encyclopedia were linked to his social media activity and employment history.

"He has been sacked, and we all took the decision not to name him because social media can be very unpleasant. //

I am a bit torn on this, is it right to keep his identity secret, or should they have thrown him to the wolves?

He was sacked because he abused the system.

He was found because he chose a high profile sensitive subject.
No, sacking is what he deserves. There's no justification for throwing him to the wolves as you put it. The tabloids will probably do it anyway.
As unpalatable though it is it is probably for his own safety that he has not been named, though a Cockney suddenly going missing from a place of work in Liverpool will stand out and I've no doubt his name will be bandied about soon enough anyway.
His identity has hardly been kept secret, blurred possibly but not secret.
Just a couple more clues Telegraph, then we can have a lynching.

Surely he was fired because he is clearly stupid.
His fiancée will think him really stupid,
civil servant sacked for malicious editing of Hillsborough Wikipedia page will not be identified...

It always amazes me that these trolls are too stupid to be able to post their bile without getting caught! if you are going to use computers/internet like this first learn how to do it!

Anyway to answer the question, no he should not be thrown to the wolves but no doubt his identity will be leaked anyway so I guess it's irrelevant. What a plonker!
Just a stupid oaf, not really deserving of being publicly flogged. He's been sacked which will have mucked his finances up, his home life up and he'll find it awkward to get another job. If he's financially overcommitted for any reason, that will cause him abject misery. I think he's a prat, but he's probably suffering enough for what were really just thoughtless, tasteless remarks.
Gromit and YMB...the voices of reason this morning, amongst others. The man was a tw*t and deserved nothing less. I suggest he gets out of Liverpool asap, as hell hath no fury like a Liverpudlian scorned.

I think that losing his job, and in no small part his reputation, ought to be enough.
Although, I doubt his identity will remain secret for long.
I appreciate that I am a generation too early to embrace social media, but i utterly fail to understand the concepts of 'throwing someone to the wolves' and even cyber-bullying, because it seems to me that a simple solution is not to look at unpleasant messages.

If I perceived i was being bullied by someone online, I would simply not look at any social media messages until the activity subsided, which bullying always does if it fails to elicit a reaction.

The minute you aver your eyes, or change pages, the power of the cyber bully is elmininated, so why on earth are young people driven to the point of suiicide, and indeed beyond?

Is social media such an integral part of life that people cannot simply walk away from it?

If I am being obtuse here, i am open to correction, but the solution to cyber bullying seems imediate and simple - don't look!
Unfortunately Andy that is the case. People have wrapped themselves up in it so much they are pretty much addicted.

I have suggested walking away to both my wife and the kids(aged 21 thru 29), but they just wont do it. Seems to be some form of masochism to me !
