Well according to the survey, 95% say it is speaking English, but is it a lot more than that?

/// And, when asked about what makes people ‘truly British’, 95 per cent of the survey’s participants said speaking English was an important factor – up from 85 per cent in 2003. ///

so you think the English team aren't British?

Okey Dokey...

Have you informed the Immigration Authorities?

They will need to confiscate their British passports

:-)
What makes One truly British ?

Well not being Scottish after September may help !

Or a member of the English Football team it appears.
If England are representing Britain, how come Scottish Welsh and Northern Irish players are ineligible? ;-)
/If England are representing Britain/

No one said England were representing Britain

the original reference was that they are a British representative - which they are

/Wanting the British representative to win the 2014 World Cup./
anne's right, the England team aren't representing Britain, they're representing England, like it says on the can. There are other British teams who didn't make the cut. This is unlike rugby league or the Olympics.

If you consider yourself British you will be supporting England.

representative:: consisting of people chosen to act and speak on behalf of a wider group.

I have a Welsh friend who wants some representation out there in Brazil.
England are his representation. I even have two Southern Irish friends who are on the English bandwagon.

My Scottish frien...er associates are being 'represented' by Argentina, Italy, France, Chile ..............you get the picture I'm sure!
Some of the answers here seem to back up the point made earlier, namely the simple one that "British" is defined by having a British passport and little else. It's the same as anywhere else in that regard with the complicating factor that there are 4 individual countries (or more if you include the Isle of Man Channel Islands Gibraltar etc). The protest someone made that N Ireland is not part of Britain illustrates the confusion further - it is still "British" however because that is the "nationality"
I'm not sure there are any hard and fast defining qualities other than the those falling in the "received wisdom" category.
In the great song "Tear Down the Union Jack" Billy Bragg sings:
'What could be more British than "'ere's a picture of me bum"'
Ok, I'll go with that one :-)
